Would it be to my advantage to change the oil every 2500 miles or stay with the standard 3000 miles? I thought about doing it every 2500 just so the oil doesn't break down completely. Also, I'm sticking with going to the dealership with the oil change as that I have a standing $5 off coupon for oil changes. Thanks for the advice!

No advantage at all, just more expense. I do mine every 6,200 miles because it's all highway miles and I use Mobil 1. The manual states this is fine for light duty highway mileage.

I'd have to disagree. In the beginning stages of "breaking in" a vehicle it is important to change your oil often due to the metal shavings. This allows your car to properly break in.

I also recommend new car owners to get the first oil change done after about 1500miles just to flush out those shavings as well as get that factory oil out of there. It breaks down over time without any actual use. I also don't recommend using synthetic oil until at least the 3rd or 4th oil change. It gives the engine a chance to break in on conventional oil swelling the seals and rings.Advantages of 2500 mile services? a bit actually and not "more expensive" then waiting another 500 miles when you look at it. If you change your oil 500 miles early each time after 5 oil changes you've done 1 extra unnecessary oil change. To me that's more expensive. Multiply that times the life of the car. I don't think the issue here is break in period.

With todays technology in machining, there is very little if no shavings to deal with. Some tech. guys say you do not even need to break in a new engine. They would be caught in the oil filter anyway. I change mine every 5000.

Something else will probably happen to the car to make you want to get rid of it (accident, lifestyle change, rust, tranny problems, etc.) before you will see any oil related problems. The last car I kept past 125k was a 92 Pontiac Grand Am that I only used the cheapest oil in the store with the cheapest filters and changed the oil every 5-6k miles and had no blue smoke and it lost less than 1 quart of oil over those 5-6k miles. BTW, I used this car to deliver pizzas in. I agree, If you drive your car hard, then you should change more often, but for most of us, its just wasted money and time.

After all the responses (thanks everyone!), it looks like oil change intervals are all personal preference. With all my new vehicles,I religiously changed my oil at 3000 miles. I think with this vehicle, Im going to try the 2500 interval on this one. Yes, I might be paying for an extra oil change every fifth one, I think my new car is worth it.

I change mine every 3000, and I use standard oil.

EVERYONE (yeah, including me) thinks their method, and choice of Oil, is best! So after 40 years of driving (and a gazillion miles) here's what I believe. I do not believe they use "break-in" oil anymore. The oil they put in at the factory is regular 5W-30 Dino Juice. There is an engine break in period which, to me, is the first 3,000 miles. Yes, I believe if you have a magnetic drain plug you will accumulate microscopic pieces of metal filings that the oil filter left behind. But I have never worn out an engine with regular oil changes using Dino Oil in non aspirated engines.I change the Oil/Filter every 3 months or 5000 miles which ever comes first and with regular Dino Oil. 90% of my driving is done via highway and I keep "the wheels on the ground" so I don't tax the oil that much.I know that some of you do not approve of my methods. But , hey, that's what we are here for.
