My brother has an 04 silverado with 42,000 miles on it and yesterday on the way to work he passed a car and when he went to slow down his speedometer was stuck on 90mph and would not fall. He got to the road he needed to turn on, pulled over and turned the truck off and the needle was stuck at 40mph. Nobody was open at 4am so he headed to work at the pace with traffic and when he left work his speedometer was on 0 and would not move. this morning I drove him to work so I can look at his truck and his throttle cable isn't tight or broke and I'm not sure what to look for and if its electrical supposable an aftermarket CD player voids the electrical part of GM warranty.any idea's on what would cause this?

Could be the VSS or Vehicle Speed Sensor its located on the passanger side tail stock of the tranny .

hmm i called dealer and they said that isn't covered on the extended warranty he has so a cluster will run $480 plus installation.

I think complaining about a problem that only appears going well over the speed limit should not be warranty but thats me heh...no cluster coverage on his extended warranty? thats odd.

anything less then top of the line extended warranty will drop the cluster quick.I just love getting people in that say "at 140 I get this vibration, is it warranty, at 80k?No its not... pay up sucka.that does suck about the cluster though... I have an electronics shop take ours and trade them for a new unit. Cheaper then dealer but not by much.CAN-AWD-VIBE

Since the cluster isn't under warranty, I'd go get one out of a boneyard.
