Tire monitoring system and aftermarket rims

When the air in my tire gets low a little light on my dash comes on to tell me so. It's my understanding that this sensor is part of the valve stem but I could be mistaken. If it is, and I was to switch to an aftermarket rim and put winter tires on my steelies is it safe to assume that with the aftermarket rims this light wouldn't come on the dash if the tire gets low? Would the dash light always appear on? Or do they install the sensors on the new rims? I might be totally off base with all this but I was just wondering.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System has nothing to do with your stock wheels or tires, It works off the ABS sensors when a tire gets low on air it rotates at a different speed than the other tires and the ABS sensors can detect this.

Aftermarket rims aren't a problem. Just follow the tire rotation monitoring system reset procedures after you get new rims or tires. Any change in rolling diameter will trip the light. If I remember correctly, while parked you're supposed to press and hold the tire monitoring system button down until it flashes. It will then relearn the new tire rotation over the next couple of driving miles.

so, as shane_c states above.............or atleast is inquiring about, is that if your getting an aftermarket set of rims (which im going to do) and is why i too am asking, is that you need an additional set of 4 valve stem monitors to go in your new set of 4 rims, hence the fact that im leaving my original valve stem sensors in my other set of rims. will the new set of 4 need to be pontiac sensors or how do they calibrate to the ABS brakes or computer (whichever it is that their rotation is being monitored by.

that doesnt answer my question, that article from the manual is something i already was aware of, what im asking and maybe you cant tell me, is if i buy another set of 4 sensors for a new set of 4 rims to keep in addition to my other set of rims (which will have different tires on them) how do you know what sensors to buy that will work like the ones in the other set of rims? do you understand what im asking?

The sensor is not in the rim. it is the ABS brake sensor. When it sees a tire not rotatinge as fast as the others it lights up. it has othing to do with the type, what kind of rim or wheel you have. if you change tires it is no problem just make sure they are all the same size.
