My guess would be that one connects direct to the pedal and the other is connected to the cruise control servo. Assuming it has cruise anyway.

sorry. when i had my 00 V6 Cougar, I wasn't into modding and didn't know much about cars. I did however, know how to put my foot to the floor which landed me my first speeding ticket.

I going along with Ragingfish, it's the cruise control. My wifes maxima also has two throttle cables and one is for the cruise control.I might get in trouble for saying this, since this site is getting a little barney-ized, but I've beat every cougar that's gone up against me (and most where before the s/c). I'm not impressed with them at all. OK, maybe I sorta like the looks of them and it is a Mercury so I shouldn't be so harsh.

If you're talking about the Duratech V6 2.5L with two intake runners per cylinder?http://img23.exs.cx/img23/467/P1010518.jpgYeah, I had one of them in my last car.The throttlebody has two cables going to it - one goes to the gas pedal, the other goes to the cruise. You can easily trace them to where they need to go. But there's another cable you may be talking about...There are two intake ports per cylinder. The long runner is for low to mid power - the pulses of air help feed the cylinders. When you rev about 3200rpm a servo motor pulls on a cable under the main intake runner and opens secondary butterflies in the short runner - allowing for more air, faster into the cylinders. It gives you lift much like a GT - but in a different way.If the servo dies or the cable breaks... your engine becomes a high RPM dog. It's a noticable loss of top end. These engines get very dirty. Carbon deposits in the secondary track are notorious for screwing up the air mix... if one butterfly sticks a slight bit and all others are closed - that cylinder runs lean and burns up plugs like crazy.I did plugs and wires every 50k miles on mine, and on the second set I had the intake cleaned - that made a world of difference. Then the A/C went out, due for new brakes, rotors, and brake lines, tires, belt, hoses, coolant flush, and a 4th windshield... so I traded it in on the Vibe. And walked away 7 days before my last payment was due. Miss that V6 though... but not the 26mpg... I would say start by pulling the plugs and looking at them in order... the OEM plugs are 100k mile but don't trust that garbage - if you have one or more plugs that are really bad, you may be suffering the same problem I did with carbon deposits in the intake.
