Purchased base 5-speed manual Vibe one month ago. Just returned today from weekend trip which resulted in just passing 3000 mile mark. Pontiac dealership recommends rotating&inspecting tires every 3000 miles. Alluded to the Ford SUV rollover problem, now about a decade back?Haven't been able to confirm this necessity anywhere else, including a search of prior messages on this bulletin board. And there may have been a NTSB Bulletin (correct name?), but have not been able to retrieve a copy of it. So...Is this a real concern? Or just an unnecessary expense?Thank you in advance for your consideration.[Have learned from&enjoyed forum's comments on tires, tire mileage etc. Not particulary worried RE them, mileage on them etc. They are a consumable, in addition to the winters here really need seperate snow tires to ensure both safety and the necessary traction remains available during those five+ months of real white-knuckle driving. Just another part of the subtle charm of ND living.]
I just do whatever the book tells me to do. And even if it's a not actually that necessary, it shouldn't cost more than $20 to rotate 'em, so better to just stay safe than sry. lol:thumbup:
I am reaaly bad at keeping up with tire rotations, but haven't had any problems with the tires. I think it depends some on how and where you drive. Also helps to have not had any alignment issues. Owner's manual says every 5K miles, I'm nowhere near that often.I thought the Ford SUV tire issue primarily resulted from Ford telling people to underinflate the tires compared to Firestones recommendations, so they wore faster and hotter. I don't think rotation was an issue.Welcome to genvibe. I always rotated mine every 6,000 which was every other oil change. The dealer had given me free rotations every 6,000 for the duration of ownership. That was a convenient point to do so. I'm continuing with the 6,000 rotations on the new car, had my first one done the other day.It *could* just be one of those things where they want to make a couple bucks. 3,000 is a bit excessive, IMO, and I tend to overmaintain. That's just more of an opportunity for them to screw up to me. Nothing's worse than having them break or strip a stud or round off one of those "almost $20 each" lug nuts (GM's price, if you've got the alloys.) Not to say rotation isn't important, it is - just not that frequent. 5-6k would be fine.I don't agree with the dealer's idea of rotation causing the Ford/Firestone fiasco. Underinflation, overloading, overheating, characteristics of the vehicle and its drivers - yes. But rotations? Not so much.
