Bad news.....

Threw a rod Sat night on our 1zz project SO today I ordered a new block, rods and bearings. we were running on the highway and the boost spiked really high really fast and that was it. Threw the rod straight through the block. We are paying for the new block, rods everything. I'm just disappointed. There are a few weak spots that we need to address, and the fact that it is mid engine car brings other complications to the table. Mid engine cars tend to have insufficient oiling systems. under heavy accel the oil gets stuck in the pan and is not circulated properly which may have also contributed to losing the engine. - I will keep everyone posted on the progress from here. For now I'm sulking..... and I'm really pissed off.

Come on man if you used Amsoil you wouldn't have a oil problem. Sorry you know I'm kidding. I'm sorry to hear about the engine. Were you doing some high RPM runs when this happened? What caused the PSI increase? This is kinda off topic but what have you done to the engine in your Matrix?

Bummer! But as one of GM's early leaders said: "The price of progress is trouble." Also, Harold Bettes of SuperFlow:" If a racer is head and shoulders above the others, chances are it's because he's standing on a pile of broken parts."When the engine's apart, I'd be interested if a piston broke first, leaving the rod flailing around, or if the rod just folded under the boost.

That sucks but you know what they say in racing: "If you don't break anything, you aren't trying hard enough."About the oiling system: looks like it's time for a dry-sump.

OOF! Any idea what peak boost was before the bottom end gave out? And was the failure entirely borne by the bottom end (i.e. was there enough pre-detonation with that kind of cylinder pressure to damage the valves/head?)...?Again, we feel your pain...

I have to hook up the laptop and check, -but I dunno if they were dataloging or not. The damage was the bottom end ONLY.... no detonation -but like I said I was not there, I have afeeling there was just too much power for the rods to handle.

makes me wonder when you hit lift, did the rod go? i heard through a buudy that there is a surge in oil preasure to activte the diff lobe? probaly why the gt motor had a much larger oil capicty. im not even sure if you had the gt motor. what if there was even an aftermarket larger oil pan?

Bummer about the engine! Thanks however, for showing us the damage. On a lighter note... one of the porche teams racing in the LeMans 24 hour was heard to say that they had to drop out due to electrical problems... that is electrical problems that occurred when a piston exited the block and severed some wires
