Hello, Benny up here in Minnesota. My callsign is K0BLR and my GMRS callsign is WQCX494. I seen the thread about mounting radios but did see to much on the subject so I will ask it here. Sorry for rehashing this. Tomorrow I'll be getting my 2005 vibe and I'm considering how I am going to mount it. The radio I have that I will be sticking in it is a Yaseu FT-7800R. What I was wondering is if someone can give some ideas on where to mount the radio. I do have a seperation cable for the radio. Also, I have a comet duplexer and on my last car ran a monoband 2 meter 5/8 wave antenna and monoband 5/8 wave 440 antenna. What I was wondering is am I better drilling hole in the top and going that route and can some one give me some alternatives. I might have it done professionaly.any input would be nice. thanks & 73,Benny, K0BLR, WQCX494

you probably will get the best "ground plane" by mounting on the roof.

can anyone else comment on some possible ideas? Or maybe Profit mounts are the only way to go.

It would depend on the size. JohnC hes meaning more towards the radio itself not the antenna I believe. Maybe in the center console or the glove box? Or is that to small?

here is an interesting way to mount the radio. I got permission from the person that took these shots to post them here. This ham is using a kenwood tribander in his toyota matrix.

I think that mounting it in the glove box can do two things for you. First off, it hides the electronics so you reduce the risk of someone breaking into your car. Second, it gives it a cleaner look. I think that the install you have posted is functioning, but isn't aesthetically pleasing - it isn't fluid with the rest of the design. An alternative might be to go for a single DIN aftermarket radio and install this in the CD gap. That would provide a cleaner install as well, but may incur too much cost or detract from the factory look...

i think it's a great idea, but i also agree that it doesn't seem to flow with the design. not unpainted anyways. so first thing i'd do would be to paint all that hardware black.if you do that, post some pictures.

what about mounting it in the arm rest? then its close, plus you could close the lid so no one sees it while your car is all alone.

but then the problem is being able to see the display. I'm going to look into the glovebox idea that really is not a bad idea.
