What's the round button-like thing on the right side of the automatic gear shift?

That's the brake/shift interlock override thingamabob. If something ever happens and you can't get the shifter out of park, you can pop off the cover (provided the dealer installed yours, lol!) and stick something in there and press down... That will let you shift from park when the car doesn't have power or when something isn't working properly with the mechanism.

mine came with out the cap, so i picked one up at the yota dealer, GM wants way to much $ for parts yota charges like 1/3 the price. i think it was under 2 bucks at yota.

One of the first things I did was lodge a piece of LEGO in there to defeat the shift interlock. That non-feature has annoyed me on all my cars, and Pontiac/Toyota did the honorable thing and provided a convenient override.

Go to the dealer and crank on them... if it didn't come with your car, then they can pay for it.

If your battery dies, and you can't shift into neutral to push the car to a new (or safe) spot, you use this override switch to shift into neutral. It's like pressing the brake to shift out of park.

That function is pretty much standard on all new vehicles.
