catalytic converter, too!

CEL came on a while back - I just got around to addressing it. (frankly, I needed an inspection, so that lit the fire). My '03 has got 86,000 miles on it, and failed inspection for the CEL - expected. My mechanic shut the light off and told me to run it for a week or so to see if it came back on. It did. So the dealer's telling me that the reason code for the CEL is saying that the catalytic converter needs to be replaced.I'm gonna bring it in for a diagnostic to get them to verify that. My question is, has anybody heard of any glitch in the computer that would produce this error code and turn the CEL light on, and/or are there any other issues that might be less expensive to repair than replacing the converter?

are you out of emissions/cat converter coverage?Otherwise there is no other reason for the cel to come on with a cat efficency code. I've never come across a glitch that set the light with codes for faults not present.

Yep - coverage expired at 80,000. I'm at 86,000.

Tell the dealer you sometimes have that egg smell. There is/was a TSB on this for the '03s and '04s. Many of us had ours replaced for free.
