Ok, here's the deal. The registration on our 2000 Neon expires tomorrow (5/31) We're going to be moving to South Dakota the week of June 19-23.Rather than paying $85 to renew the registration for one year, we're thinking of paying for a 30 day general use permit, and then registering the car in South Dakota before the permit expires.Any thoughts? Looks to me like we're moving just in time to avoid paying for a full year of registration. The registration on our Vibe doesn't expire until September.

Hey Brad--if you like I can call the Minnehaha County courthouse and see what they say about it. Maybe you could get SD plates already or something. I guess it would depend on how much the 30 day use thing is...I wouldn't want to pay a whole lot if it were me.
After looking, I see the fee for the 30 day permit is $15. I suppose I should get in contact with the courthouse and see if there are any issues with registering a vehicle in SD with a temporary permit.

I have a feeling it's not going to happen. The website asks for my wife's DL number and the VIN (since the car's still in her name) but for some reason, it doesn't recognize her as the owner. My guess is that since we just paid off her loan, the title might not show her as the owner yet. I think we're just going to have to pay the full fee for the year. (I tried my DL number and the VIN for our Vibe, and I could get a temp permit for the Vibe, just not our NEON.)Oh well, it was a nice thought.

Arizona will refund a prorated portion of your registration fee. They also charge something to do so, but it is nice to know that you can get some of it back. There is a plate refund link on http://www.servicearizona.com

Well I got off the phone with Servicearizona.com and the Minnehaha County treasurer's office, and we should be OK with the temporary permit for the Neon. All the state of SD needs is our title (which we have) so we'll be fine, as long as we get the car registered before June 30 (one week after we're scheduled to pull into town, no rush there!) I'd rather pay the state of AZ $15 than $85 one last time, if I'm going to have to turn around and pay SD for the rest of 2006. BTW, does anyone have a spare front plate bracket for an 03 Vibe? We'll be needing one in about 3-4 weeks.
