Your car buying lineage

OK, we have a thread about your first car, a thread about your other cars and we assume the majority of people here have a Vibe so I think it would be interesting to see what you went through from your first car to your Vibe (or current car if you don't have a Vibe), not including cars owned by your parents. And what was your first new car. Here's my list:1976 Chevrolet Nova, 2-door, was 250 straight-6: now 327 V8, silver with red interior, used, 1988-current1985 Chevrolet Cavalier, 4-door, 2.0L 4-cyl, silver with red interior, used, 1993-19961992 Chevrolet Cavalier, 4-door, 2.0L 4-cyl, blue with bluish-grey interior, used, 1996-19991993 Pontiac Sunbird, 2-door, 3.1L V6, red with grey interior, used, 1996-2002 (replaced the '85 Cavalier)1999 Plymouth Voyager, 2.4L 4-cyl, Amethyst with grey interior, 1st new car, 1999-2001 (replaced the '92 Cavalier)2002 Chrysler Voyager, 2.4L 4-cyl, silver with grey interior, new, 2001-current (replaced the 3-year leased '99 Voyager)2003 Pontiac Vibe, 1.8L 4-cyl, Satellite (silver), with charcoal (black) interior, new, 2002-current (replaced the '93 Sunbird)

1972 Honda 600 Sedan. I was genetically programmed to have this car. It was Red, but the red faded quickly so I had it painted a blue similar to the Neptune Blue of my current Vibe. Bought used in 1975 with <1500 miles on it, and the plastic shipping door panel covers never removed. 2 cylinder air cooled. 40mpg city or highway. It died of timing chain failure at 52,000 miles. This car had been a "Buy one car, get a second car free" special at a Cadilac Dealer. If you bought a Caddy, you got this Honda free.1980 Ford Pinto. I had ordered a new Honda Civic, but the dealer tried to jack up the price when it arrived. Went to Ford where they begged me to buy the Pinto, and offered an (unheard of at the time) 5 year bumper-to-bumper warranty. $1000 less than the Civic. Ran great, but little pieces of trim kept falling off. POS.1984 Honda Civic Station Wagon. Good car. Weak frame. 1st Wife kept it in divorce.1985 Honda 250 Scooter. Still have it. Stopped running last fall. Won't start now. 1986.5 Nissan Pickup. Still have it. Still runs great.2002 Nissan Altima. Beautiful. Fast. Thrilling. Wife's daily driver.2003 Vibe. Neptune Blue. I was genetically programmed to have this car. Danged fun. Causes silly grin on my face when I drive it.My next car will be a Hybrid. KSNeptune.

This will take some thought and I might overlook one or two.1953 Chev 2100? (precursor to the Biscayne) 4 door 6 stick.1959 Austin A40 Cambridge 4 door 4 cylinder 4 on the tree.1963 Dodge 220 313 V-8 pushbutton automatic.. moved out well.1967 Dodge Coronet 500 318 V-8 auto yellow convertible (my first new car and a wild and foolish extravagance, but the memories of which I will always cherish).1968 Ford Country Sedan 390 V-8 2 barrel auto. a great car which also moved out well.1965 Mercury F-250 300 cubic inch 6 with three on the tree.. a real stump puller!1968 Volkswagon Rabbit stick.. lots of fun but gave me nothing but trouble.1969 American Motors Ambassador 2 door hardtop (top line) with 343 V-8.. not a cool car but a good one complete with 8 track stereo.1974 Ford F-150 Explorer 300 cu. in. 6 auto.. really nice truck. 1979 Chrysler Newport 318 V-8 4 door auto. A nice car but a dog performance wise. Had an overdrive in it that killed the usual briskness of a Chrysler automatic.1984 Ford F-150 Explorer 302 V-8. Again an excellent truck!1987 Nissan Maxima V-6 auto. THis car showed great promise but gave me a great deal of mechanical grief. I finally dumped it prematurely.1989 Ford Taurus 3.8 V-6. A beautiful car with leather, lumbar, sun roof and the works as well as a brisk performer. Perhaps the poshest car I will ever own though it gave me some mechanical grief.1994 Olds 88 LSS V-6 auto loaded except for leather. A top notch car and the beginning of a GM era. Still have this car and enjoy it.1996 GMC Sierra SLT extendacab 305 V-8 with leather and the works. Love this truck as well but it does like the gas pumps! Might as well have gotten the 350 V-8 and regretted not doing so later.2003 Pontiac Vibe Base stick with power package, safety and security and alloys. I love this car!So many memories!

1986 Chrysler Lebaron GTS. Purchased from my step mom and drove it the day I got my license. Turbo went out 2 months later required 2,000 in repairs, sold vehicle1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais. Iron Duke engine, 180,000 miles. Had it Junior and Senior year in HS, allot of memories1995 Camaro Z28, bought with 23,000 miles. See below for modifications. I still own this car, I bought it when I was 18.1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T Spyder, awesome, replaced my Cutlass with this car for year round use, lolMoney got tight so I sold the eclipse. Had to drive the camaro full time for a while.1993 Ford Escort Wagon!!! Yeah that's right a station wagon after these cars. I bought from my dad for $500 when money was still tight, got lucky and was able to put the camaro in storage right before winter, phew!2002 VW Golf. Met my future wife, this was for her2003 Vibe to replace the Escort. I would still be driving it but it developed a bearing knock at 130,000 miles. Time to move on. I'm glad I did, it makes winter easier when I have to put the camaro away.

1972 AMF Roadmaster 10 speed. Still have it. No original parts but the frame and fork. Delivered as white pearl. Now VW Mars red clearcoat. Needs a repaint.1975 Chevrolet Monza 2+2. Built in St. Terese (sp?) Quebec. 4 cyl, 4 spd manual, hatchback, medium blue metallic, blue vinyl interior. Died at 17 years and 125K miles. Loved it dearly. Terrible engineering, questionable reliability, but I'd buy another one in an instant. The present Celica GT is the modern equivalent (with much better engineering and reliability). Vibe-Rate's 1975 Olds Starfire was the same car with a better engine and trim. Factory order, took four months to arrive.1982 Pontiac Trans Am, Recaro special edition, one of 2000 built. Black with gold lower trim, charcoal interior. Every option except white letter tires. Window sticker ran to 2 pages. Adequate engineering, atrocious reliability, terrible dealer and a mistake from the day I took it home. Nice firm German Recaro buckets and a nice firm American suspension makes for a tough (and not in the good sense) ride. 13 MPG from a 165 HP fuel injected (TBI) 5 liter V-8. Hanger queen that sat in the garage whenever rain or snow threatened. How do you think the Monza got to 17 years? Got rid of it at 11 years and 60K miles. Factory order, took four months to arrive.1993 Saturn SW2 wagon. Blue-green metallic, beige interior. Every option. Restored my faith in cars designed and built in the US. Very few minor defects on delivery, very few major repairs in 10 years, 105K miles. Better than twice the gas milage of the Trans Am, less than half the cost of insurance, the acceleration was better and the handling on typically crappy streets was superior. The opposite of the hanger queen, it never got waxed yet the clearcoat paint over plastic body panels looked nearly new the day I sold it to a coworker. As I've posted elsewhere, only the 7-year limit on the GM card earnings, and the inability to use the earnings on a Saturn, kept me from buying another one. Factory order that also took 4 months to be delivered.2003 Pontiac Vibe, lava monotone, charcoal interior, automatic, power package, side airbags, ABS, 16" alloys, cargo mat, nets, bumper protector. Flawless build quality, great eyeball height without being tippy during enthusiastic cornering. Factory order, took three months to arrive. Ask me in 9 years and 10 months how it turned out.

The 318 V8 had about 140hp, 10 less than the 4 cyl Cavalier Z24 I had many years later! I think chrysler still uses the 318 V8 to this day.

Hey Cam, I just noticed - 2 Austin A40's on this list! Mine was a Farina A40 which I bought for 25 pounds (UK).I can't imagine an Austin lasting too long in a Canadian winter.

My Dad had a string of Austins. Beautifully appointed cars (leather interiors and nicely finished) but the electrics were crap and they had a great aversion to Canadian winters. By and large they served us very well though. If you haven't driven a Mini, you haven't lived!

I'm humbled, but are you ever fickle! I overlooked my 1952 Chev pickup which I still have. Also one Yamaha 250 motorcycle.

There is a few so here goes. Many were owned at the same time.1966 Volvo 122 S1974 Mercury Comet (Lime yellow sweet)1978 Olds Cutlass 442 (black and gold - boulevard cruiser)1984 Pontiac Fiero (one of the first sold in Canada)1984 Mustang GT (one of my favorites)1986 Ford Escort (Back to school had to sell mustang SOB!!)1988 Pontiac Sunbird GT (4 cyl base GUTLESS)1988 Pontiac Sunbird GT Turbo (should have bought this to begin with)1990 Jeep YJ (moved to British Columbia needed an image)1992 Ford Explorer (Just a mistake)1994 Nissan Sentra (Family)1995 Nissan 240 SX (mid life crisis)1995 Nissan Altima (more family)1997 GMC Yukon (Felt like I needed to burn more gas)1998 VW Beetle (My wife had to have one)1999 VW Passat (The beetle was to cute, to small and to many punch buggies)1999 GMC Sierra 2500 (More gas to burn)2000 Audi A4 (The passat motor literally blew up. VW bought it back and we replaced with Audi)2001 GMC 2500 HD (8.1 Litre BIG torque and much more gas)2001 GMC Jimmy (In Alberta Canada you can actually get more for a truck than you paid for it if you find the right buyer. Goodbye 8.1 hello Jimmy)2003 Pontiac Vibe AWD (Believe it or not we actually like the Vibe better than the Audi. Not as much power but far more character)

Interesting thread. Here's my history . . .1964 VW Beetle (used)1980 VW Rabbit C 2-door w/ sunroof (first new car)1991 VW Golf 4-door1993 Saturn Wagon (used - purchased for my wife)1989 Toyota Corolla 4-door (used - purchased in midst of divorce - reliable but definitely not very versatile)2003 Pontiac Vibe GTAll but the Saturn were equiped with manual transmissions. My Salsa Vibe is close to the color of my first VW (red) and has a sunroof like my Rabbit.quote:1968 Volkswagon Rabbit stick.. lots of fun but gave me nothing but trouble.Cam, do you mean Beetle? VW Rabbits were not made until the '70s
