What's up with the site showing current postings on threads that are month's old? I've noticed this before, but seems to be happening a lot lately.

I noticed that too. An old thread comes up on the active topics list with out anyone posting in it. The last post will still be months old. Weird!

I notice it on postings that have polls. If someone votes, there is no post but the site gets listed as having a new post.

it happens for the reasons in the thread Nick linked, or the one he linked in the thread he linked, etc. A vote in a poll always pushes it to the top, and when the mods do organizing, like moving a thread to the appropriate forum, or merging duplicate threads together, that activity kicks it to the top of the active threads.
