03 shifting soleniod

My 03Vibe, when coming to a stop the RPMs would go from about 800 up to about 1000 and then back down to about 800. Some times it would do it 2 times before I made a complete stop. The check engine light took about 2 weeks before it came on so the dealer would do nothing. I took it to a pontiac dealer again after the check engine light came on and it read shifting soleniod. They replaced the PCM and the car was great for about 2 weeks and now it is doing it again and the check engine light is not on. Anyone with the same experience or a solution your help would be greatly appreciated. O... My milage is almost 70,000.

I would have it scanned for codes anyway, check engine light or not. My automatic died at 63,000 miles - it wouldn't shift out of first anymore. When the dealer had it in to replace the transmission, there were two codes there, P07something's for shift solenoids - yet the check engine light never came on during the whole ordeal, not once. You would think it would, seeing how catastrophic of a failure it was, but nope! I always thought that everything the computer monitors that had a code for something and the conditions that are required to set a code were present, it would trigger the light but apparently not. What codes did it set previously when they looked at it? Good luck to you, transmission problems aren't fun!

The code was P07something, I think P0076/77/78/79. I just remember shifting soleniod.

Mine does the same thing....... thought it was normal. Let me know how it works out..... maybe I should get a diagnostic as well.

I got to find the P/W from the last dealer to see what the code was. Do U know where the shifting soleniod is located.

Got it... P0770 shifting soleniod, and the tech stated he traced it back to my PCM. PCM was replaced but that worked for about 2 weeks.

I can go to like Autozone and they'll run a diagnostic for free, correct? If one of those solenoids comes up on the diagnostic what do I do to fix it on my own? Do I just have to tighten them up or something? Thanks!

I went to auto zone and got a free diagnostic check. I am more of an electronics guy not a mechanic, so I am not to 100% sure what to do. I guess, I would first find the soleniods and check them for leaks and electrical problems. I try to do things on my own to save $$$$$, but sometimes it costs just as much if you make a mistake. I will post everything that I find, so that all may benefit from my pain.

When you say ti jumps from 800 to 1000, and then drops back down as you are coming to a stop, how fast are you going when it happens?Seems like, in a theoretical way anyway, that as you slow down, the tranny will downshift, and when the lower gear engages the lower gear the rpms will jump a little. It would be interesting to hear from a number of auto tranny owners whther this rpm jump is normal or not. It could be normal, the CEL was coincidental, and there is nothing to fix.

I am going 10MPH or less. This never happened before, the RPM's were solid everytime I stopped, it all started in the last few months. OW... the RPM's are now getting down to about 700 and going up to 8-900 then back down. This is how it all started the last time and I am guessing I will have a check engine light on within th next 2 weeks. When the car is in park and idling it is normally at 1000 and now it is at 800.

Mine idles at about 800 when warm which is entirely normal but when slowing down it'll go to 800 then jump to 1000 and go back down to 800. This also happens when I'm in the city going under like 35 MPH. If I'm getting on the highway and accelerating I really don't see an issue. I hurt the solenoid problem only happens under 55 MPH and is caused by the torque convertor locking up before it should so you have under and over shifts at points. I don't know what to do.

Remember there is a power steering switch. That when the wheel is turned at low speeds. This increases idle to provide proper pressure for the steering system. Usually about 200rpm increase. ALSO, Joatmon, where are getting that "manual pics" from???

thanks for the heads up via IMturns out I had grabbed the pic and procedure from the only wrong section.Matrix had three auto tranny options in 2003 base 2wdawdXRS 2wdI posted the procedure and pic for the XRS auto tranny, a beast never offered in a vibe. Don't know if CUV has 2wd or awd, so I made 2 zip files, one with the P0770 procedure and parts location for the AWD, another with the same info for the 2wd. The awd one is in my edited prior post above, the 2wd files are here

Got my 03 checked out from head to toe by a friend of a friend who happens to be a mechanic. He could not find anything wrong with my vibe and just recommended that I change out my sparkplugs being that I have almost 70,000 miles.
