Security Harness

I was at a stereo shop the other day and was asking about an aftermarket HU for the Vibe. They said I would need to also purchase some sort of security harness since GM ties a lot of security stuff into the factory HU. They told me the harness would be ~$100. What exactly is this harness called? Any dealers on Ebay?

It's BS, you don't need it. You need Metra part 70-2003 for your headunit. You need the basic wiring harness, mounting kit, and antenna adapter. Nothing more. The Vibe is NOT a GM when it comes to the audio system.

Thanks for your reply. I was thinking too that the Vibe didn't need it since it's for the most part a Toyota. Is this something though that other GM vehicles require when installing an aftermarket HU?

A good portion of GM's from '03 and newer, yes.

I just noticed your post and noticed I have a different one that I have bought, so I thought I would ask. I tried searching for that part number here but I'm getting nothing but threads about everybody's cars in the garage. Anyway, after the misfortune of yet another stock radio dying a couple days ago, I decided I needed to go aftermarket. Without looking through posts here because I wasn't anywhere near a computer, I just kinda showed up at Circuit City and asked for the stuff I would need to hook up an aftermarket radio... He looked it up and that's what he gave me. The package says something about it being a Chevrolet harness, but past experience was pretty much that it didn't matter, GM was GM. However I haven't messed around with any aftermarket stuff since 1997. I should be getting the radio in within a couple of days hopefully... I guess I'll find out soon enough if this harness works or not... I may pull the stock radio out tomorrow and see if this harness will plug in and if everything will line up...Thanks for any input you may have... Hopefully I don't have to take this thing back. I do have the right dash kit and antenna adapter at least. --> update hey, it looks like it will work. I think I answered my question. Metra's site doesn't show the 80-2003 for the Vibe, 70-2003 is the only one listed. But I googled and found a thread here on gvc.

Yes, sorry, 70-2003 and 80-2003 are interchangable. One of them is exclusive to Circuit City stores and has an extra connection to allow for 'soldier free' connections with a matching radio-specific adapter. Or you can just cut off the extra connector and wire it yourself! You also do NOT need to run the extra red wire that comes with it, ACC is in the factory harness in the vibe.

Good deal. The harness I have is one of the special ones you mentioned, but I believe I'll just cut plug off. The new radio will be here tomorrow, and I can probably get the snipping and soldering done in less time than it would take to drive back to Circuit City.As long as I can get the audio and antenna amplifiers running without too much of a hassle, I should be in business in no time. Thanks for the input!
