XXX DVD - The GTO is Back

Watched the Vin Diesel XXX DVD last night - Lots of good action. Kind of a James Bond on steroids. Anyway in the extra features there is a spot on the return of the GTO. The spot features clips of Pontiacs performance cars. (04 grand prix GTP, Grand Am, Sunfire, GTO and two Vibes both satellite one monotone the other not). They also show a shot of the gauge cluster. I thought it was pretty cool. Also an interview with a Pontiac guy. Looks like Pontiac is backing performance cars. Good news... New GTO looks pretty hot. To bad we won't be getting in Canada... Wonder if the new GTO will be in the sequel????

I was thinking it looked more like a Grand Prix. I'm not all that fond of the Grand Prix. Love Grand Am's though.

Sputnik: Grand Am's arent all that great I like my Vibe better, I had a 2000 Grand Am GT untill the lease was up and i returned it (then i got my Vibe) i wasnt all that happy with the Grand Am i really wasnt, The brakes were bad, and i had alot of electrinoic problems with it, plus the hazard lights and blinkiners started to go. I was VERy unhappy with it, I love the vibe though.

Look too "PLAIN JANE " in my opinion. Needs front hood scoops and a meaner looking front end. Looks like a copy of the Grand Prix--which styling is very dated.I've seen pics of the rear and it is also plain looking . I wouldn't even consider buying it. James

I like my Vibe better than Grand Ams as well. My mom's on her second Grand Am and had her first one for 11 years.

The new GTO is based on the Catera platform(just look at the resemblance). And I believe that its made in Australia by Holden(australian GM division with mainly Opel designed vehicles).

According to Motor Trend from a few months back, Toyota4Life is absolutely correct. The new GTO is the same as one of the Opel cars, but is supposed to be rear wheel drive with a GM drivetrain. I agree with the others here about the styling. The performance figures were also unimpressive considering the GTO image and name. I expected much more in the looks and performance departments. Oh well, must be GM trying to appeal to the masses again with cookie-cutter cars. I won't be buying one any time soon. Would have been nice, I think, if they would have went with some retro styling like Ford did with the newer bodystyle Mustangs and the Thunderbird.

Initially they were talking about using the Vette's ZR1 360HP engine in it, has that changed? It does look an awful lot like a curvier Grand Prix. Looks wise, I do not thing it is worthy of the GTO name plaet. Kinda likt the Corolla / Nova from the late 80's early 90's, what are/were they thinking?

I think the GTO is gonna go off good. I saw a red one at the L.A. Auto Show and it looked HOT! Very nice... they offer a lot of nice interior options. 348 horse......STOCK..... what's to complain about that!

I saw the yellow GTO (the pic I posted above) and I really like it. Including the available power and options really make it appealing to me. Just standing around the display for the GTO at the NAIAS, I got about a 50/50 response of like it or don't like it. I am one of the "like it" people.I guess I am not too biased since I was not involved or too interested in the previous GTO. Anything new and sleek looking like this new GTO is good in my book. Another pic

Oh God! It looks like my sister's old '96 Monte Carlo from the rear 3/4 view with different taillights. YUCK!!! What a disgrace to the GTO name. Now I will have to be embarrassed to mention to people that my dad used to have a '70 GTO convertible. What a shame. For those who saw it in the NAIAS show, remember that when a concept car goes to mass production, about 20% of the production car is the same as the show car, at best. Come on you guys, you know this! The show car advertises 348 hp--that means it will have about 108 hp when it goes into production. V-8's mysteriously turn into overworked 4 poppers and mediocre V-6's. I'll belive it when I see it, but from what I've seen already, I don't want to see it. I want to cry. What did they do to such a legendary car? Why? Why?I will want to rip the GTO badges off of every one of them I see on the road for the sake of preserving the name. A car that plain looking should be nameless.

I don't think the new GTO is all that bad. 300-hp V8, 6-speed and rear wheel drive. I just think it should have been more retro like the T-bord and 2005 Mustang. It looks good but not different enough from a Grand Prix and Bonneville. I also agree that the rear quarter view makes it look very similar to the Lumina-based Monte Carlo of a few years ago.

There is a small write up of the GTO show car that they unveiled at the LA Auto Sho at canadiandriver.comhttp://www.canadiandriver.com/news/030103-11.htm

Pics are worth 1,000 words-You hit the nail right on the head. GM could of done a better job, and Yes a retro style would look better. James
