I believe the very early '05 models were cable operated but most are DBW. You were working on yours, did you see a cable and spring set-up on your throttle body? If not, it is DBW.

Good luck with this one!oh J-body... I used to hang out with a J-body club. some nice and some not so nice looking sunfires and cavaliers. Got more pics of yours? I used to own a 96 Sunfire GT 5spd but never got around to doing much with it.

so how does a cable operated throttle differ from a DBW throttle... and how does a DBW throttle work??

An electronic sensor monitors position of the gas pedal and another electronic sensor at the TB moves (opens/closes) the butterfly to correspond with the position of the gas pedal.Drive By Wire is all electronics vs. a throttle cable.

Think of it like the difference between a radio controled plane and a kite.

Mine is cable. Which I think is better in the terms of less to go wrong. What are the performance benefits to a DBW?

What are the performance benefits to a DBW?[/QUOTE]No cable slop, slack or wear and instant response to changing conditions. A number of high-end vehicles have gone to DBW including some diesel rigs.

when you do finaly get one, there is a small triangle shaped plastic grill in your front bumper. I recommend taking that out, and cut the back open so you still have the slots, but air can pass through. This will increase the air into the wheel well where your filter will be. Not much, but every little bit helps.
