Superbowl XL

I can't believe that it's 2 days before the big game and nobody's posted on it yet. Being here in Pittsburgh, it's impossible not to know what is going on with celebrating the big game. News coverage is non-stop, flags are flying from people's homes and cars, the buidings downtown and on the parkway west heading toward the airport are sporting huge Steelers banners, this town is jacked up!!! I've lived here all my life and I can say that the people of Pittsburgh enjoy all their pro and college sports teams, but this is without any doubt a huge football city. This place goes totally nuts for the Steelers even when they're not having a great season, now that they made it to the Superbowl, the insanity has risen to an even higher level. The police have already announced plans to shut down all the streets in several areas of the city to traffic for the game to help with crowd control and to prevent pedestrian accidents (because people get drunk and go totally nuts). I remember the total frenzy in the city the last time we made it to the Superbowl in 1995. After the AFC Championship game, people went pouring out of the bars in the city's South Side area and were throwing a huge party in the streets. This time, the city has planned ahead so fans can celebrate and party safely, which I'm glad to see.I've left my terrible towel put away until now. In past years it had brought bad luck when I brought it out so I've waited until now.The celebrations downtown yesterday I heard were great. The city's administration announced before the playoffs began that it would leave up the Christmas Tree downtown at the city-county building until the Steelers playoff season ended. During the week before each playoff game, people gathered in front of the building to celebrate and cheer on the Steelers and the tree has been nicknamed "The Terrible Tree" as a play off of the "Terrible Towel". Each week someone made a pinata of the opposing quarterback and people got to whack the hell out of it. Even the nearby city of Greensburg renamed itself "BlackandGoldsburg" until Monday to support the Steelers and thank them for using many nearby facilities for so many years for the Steeler's pre-season activities. The advertising on TV for several local businesses has featured some great Steelers support.I can't believe the amount of Steelers support it see in reports from Detroit. There's a downtown Detroit sports bar that made itself a black and gold bar and is advertising on the radio stations here in Pittsburgh. Every RV rental place in the Pittsburgh region has rented out every available RV, most of which have already departed full of Steeler fans to head to Detroit for this weekend. I heard that the last available RV's had to be rented from far away in West Virginia. I'm sure the festivities in Detroit will be absolutely rockin' with thousands of Steeler fans.I'll have to try and get some pics of the buildings all decorated up around town.GO STEELERS!!! GO STEELERS!!! GO STEELERS!!!1974 1975 1978 1979 2005 SUPERBOWL CHAMPS! GET THAT ONE FOR THE THUMB!!!!!!!

being here in metro-Detroit area we have been bombareded continuously for the last several weeks. As much as I love football, I will actually be kind of glad to see the game be over.

It is crazy here in Detroit! I do not live in Detroit but it still is! Drive to Canada and hit the tunnel in Detroit on Tues, that was like normal but I am sure if I were to do that now I would have difficulty!

I know here in Phoenix, the big talk isn't about Superbowl XL, but Superbowl XLII, which is going to be over in Glendale, AZ. Sounds like the Stadium should be finished by this fall (it's still under construction).Whenever they talk about Sunday's game, they finish the story with how Glendale is learning from Detroit on how to host a Superbowl.

I always thought that the superbowl year was given for the year of the playing season, not the year in which the actual game was won.I know it's that way in hockey too, for example the Penguins won their first Stanley cup in May of 1992, they were the 1991 Stanley Cup Champions. So this is the Superbowl for the NFL's 2005 season, the winner of which has yet to be determined. The Patriots won the 2003 and 2004 Superbowls even though the actual Superbowl games were played in the following calandar years, respectively.

But that thread got buried way down on the list by over 2 weeks of inactivity and seems to only be a prediction thread. I wanted to see more of a fan thread, so here we are.As for Iron City, you probably won't see it around much. The brewery was shut down because they hadn't paid their water bill in over 3 months. Shortly afterward, they filed for bankruptcy, but I think they've re-opened or are set to re-open. I don't care either way, I don't like IC. I've jetskiied in the river where their water is drawn from and I can say with certainty that I don't want to drink any product made from it. Gimme a Yuengling lager, Dos Equis, or MGD any day instead.

lol. I hear ya there. I don't want this to turn into a beer thread (although beer and the superbowl go together like peanut butter and jelly), but I can't badmouth all microbrews either. We've got a few local ones that I enjoy, and man did I ever enjoy the Big Buck brewery that was right next to my hotel when I went to the GenVibe Supermeet II in 2004. Good thing that the hotel was right next to it! I don't care much for very heavy, dark beers, and I can't stand IPA's (India Pale Ale). Lagers are always my favorite.

"Budweiser, MGD, Bud light, Coors, stuff that tastes like beer."You gotta be freaking sh*tting me. Those are the most generic, mass produced, flavorless brands of crap made in America. Why not just drink water or wine coolers or maybe champagne coolies?Seriuosly, those are the "Frams" of beers. Do your liver a favor: Fill it up with the quality stuff. Say no to bad beer.PS: Were you kidding and I got reeled in here or something?

nope not kidding, i'm totally serious, yeah they may be generic, but it's real beer, don't get me wrong i like yeungling and corona too, i just don't like the brewery crap.

The process of making beer is pretty much the same whether it's a microbrew, a small/regional brewery or the mass-produced-cram-it-down-their-piehole large brewer. The main difference is quality; why spend $20 on an 18 pack of colored water when you get a high-quality brew with character, flavor and real craftsmanship for the same price.I just don't get this. Maybe you ought to PCS to Germany sometime...you'll come back fixed.

pssssht germany shmermany i really don't drink a whole lot of beer in general. I personally prefer liquor but i don't like a lot of the brewery stuff i guess cuz i grew up on the big 3 and it always tastes like there's something wrong with brewery beer something added that shouldn't be there. my sister did get me to liking a beer called boulevard wheat. and something else i can't remember what it was now but anyways that's my story and i'm sticking to it

I've got to somewhat agree. 2 beer rules for me:If a spoon would stand in it....bleeechhh.If it tastes like tea made from hops....bleeechhh.It has to be a pretty golden color with a fairly balanced body and flavor, leaning toward the flavor of the grain. I hate it when all it tastes like is bitter hops. Ick. All this beer talk has tempted me too much, now I've gotta go grab one. Mmmm, a nice, cold Dos Equis. Ahhh. Now back to football. Can anyone help me out on the calendar date of the Superbowl vs. the season date? Is there a definitive answer on this?

according to this website it's called Superbowl XL 2006 http://sperbowl-tickets-xl-2006.blogspot.com/but i couldn't find anything on like NFL.com or anything like that to confirm it

Yeah, I clicked the link, but it's just somebody's blog. Not exactly the definitive answer I'm looking for. They could have written that it's the 1849 Superbowl, but it doesn't make it true.I think that the NHL, NBA, and MLB all use the year that the regular season started in to name the champion of a given year.

The Steelers have long been known to have won the Superbowl 4 times in the 1970's, with the last being 1979. However, the 4th Superbowl win was in January 1980.I was using Wikipedia to try to get an answer, but there doesn't seem to be a solid answer. But I did find that the team favored to win the Superbowl going into the game has lost only 11 times in 39 Superbowls. The Steelers were favored to win last week by 3 1/2 points, now it's up to 4. Let's hope the odds hold true again this time!

He told the press he turned his ankle in practice, and is listed as probable for Sunday.I really like Polamalu, but this is good news for Seattle. Even if he is only down to 90%, this could be the difference in the game. I read that a van carrying Alexander, Hasselbeck and 4 others ran into a security gate. The guys were "jolted" out of their seats but no injuries. Jeesh! Uh...Seatbelts???http://www.superbowl.com/news/story/9206980

I heard about that accident on the news. I think that was on the first or second day that the Seahawks team arrived in Detroit? I guess the driver was a Steelers fan .I like Polamalu a bunch. I'd honestly love to meet the guy in person, he seems fascinating on a personal level and is supposed to be a really wonderful guy. Same for Hines Ward. My sister was out bar-hopping with some friends several months ago and a few Steelers players showed up. Ward bought her and her friends a drink while they were there. But Polamalu is awesome. He became my favorite player in the league last season. I think he'd be my favorite even if he didn't play for the Steelers. Knowing him, if it is at all possible, he'll be playing Sunday and he will be OK. I still think the turned ankle story was made up. It had to be Tonya Harding's goons.

I like how Alexander made a funny on Jerome Bettis about the gate accident in this report:http://www.superbowl.com/news/story/9197443I'm glad nobody was hurt. It would suck for a team to make it so far and then somehow be adversely affected by something so stupid. I want this game to be won fair and square, not because a van was flipped over by a security gate, Tonya Harding's goons whack players in the ankles while they're sleeping, or the refs totally blow a call and overturn a valid interception (again).

I wouldn't look for Hines to go anywhere anytime soon. I've seen several in-depth interviews with him and I'm about 95% certain that he will retire as a Steeler.

Sorry to interrupt the beer discussion thread, but following 'exhaustive' research on NFL.com and FOXSports.COM, here's what I've concluded...They give Superbowl games ROMAN NUMERALS to cause/avoid (your choice) confusion about which season they refer to, but they NEVER directly associate a YEAR/SEASON with the game number:Superbowl I was held in January 1967, following the 1966 season, but it was NOT 'Superbowl 1966' -OR- 'Superbowl 1967', it was 'Superbowl I' The Superbowl I score is contained in the 1966 NFL season archive. Link to NFL history 1966 --> http://www.nfl.com/history/standings/1966BTW, both the Superbowl I AND Superbowl II scores are contained in the 1967 NFL season archive! Here's a fun link to FOXSports Time Capsules for Superbowls I through XLIV (Yes, 2010!) --> http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/3326386TV Announcer Voice: "Due to a general lack of interest in the game, we are now resuming the beer discussion thread, already in progress!" Do they still brew 'Old Stoney' in Pennsylvania??? Had some at a Fraternity conference in Seven Springs, PA back in 1974.

Yeah, I've seen Stoney cans at some local beer distributers. Can't say I've ever had it though. The name "Superbowl" did not come about until Superbowl III. The coach of the KC Chiefs coined the term and it stuck, the league adopted it and applied it retroactively to the 2 previous championship games. Wikipedia has lots of info on every Superbowl game, even on ones up to 2011.I only had the question about the numbering because all the banners I've seen around town show the calendar years, not the Roman numerials. I never saw one that showed the Steelers winning in 1980, even though their last Superbowl win was in January of that year. I wondered what they would put on the new banners if we win tomorrow, 2005 or 2006? I thought it would be 2005 because the winner of this Superbowl will be the 2005 season champs.

by joholste
Kostby has it right i think they did the roman numerals so that we didn't have to worry about what year it would fall on
