Radar detector

Post by xrs06 »

Me again, what do you think of radar detector? I know they are illegal but are they "detectable"? I know most of them are VG-2 immune, but is it that technology that is being used here, in Quebec? Would like to have advice from people "who knows", not from people "who heard", please.

So far all radar detectors are detectable by the Spectre detector. The only difference is at what distance they can be detected. Higher priced detectors like the Valentine 1, Passport 8500, and Beltronics RX65 are detected at no more than 300 meters. Cheaper detectors can be found as far as 1.5 kilometers away.Currently Beltronics is developing the model STi that is immune to radar detector finders. Tests have shown that it was only detectable within 5 meters. They will be released in January and can be ordered here for $450 US.http://www.radarbusters.com/pr...r.asp

Here in the states, Virginia is the only state with a ban on them. And semi rigs are forbidden to have them.Regardless - how to RD Detectors detect your device? (edit- nevermind... I RTFA... http://www.radarbusters.com/su...t.asp )Mine is currently VG2 immune... but gives me false alerts on it, so I deactivated it. The article above describes how to prevent detection. In a nutshell - aim your detector slightly down. The RDD picks up the signal emitted by the ocilator inside the detection horn. If the RDD isn't in a line of sight of the occilator - it won't pick it up.Also VG2 proof RD's occilators simply operate at a higher frequency than VG2 RDD's can detect. They also say that RDD's aren't accurate - in a group of cars, it can't tell which has a RD. Then again, the one car with a black box hanging from it's windshield is a dead giveaway. It's a cat and mouse game - act and react... and we spend the money to upgrade.

If they would just take your RD away, I could live with that. It's the fine you have to pay that is hard to swallow...

I've heard of the RCMP or provincial police giving some people 2 choices... rip it out and drive over it or pay the fine...

Keep a cheap-o detector powered up and stored in your center console (the little outlet is good for something). If you get popped, Hide the expensive Passport and give up your cheap-o. When you hand it to the cop, it'll be nice and warm and he'll think he got the right one.

Are you sure there is no fine to pay on top of giving the RD?

From what I have read from the SAAQ website you are liable to a large fine along with the cops taking away your RD. Do you really want to take a chance with the SQ (provincial police )?Same thing for you guys from the US. It is illegal to have a detector in Quebec (even if it is legal in your state) and even if it is not in use!!!

I have no idea about fines, etc. I live in a US state that allows detectors. I was just making a suggestion to go with Mavrik's post.Quote, originally posted by xrs06 »Are you sure there is no fine to pay on top of giving the RD?

You're a lucky guy to live somewhere you can use those RD. Do you own one? If yes, which one and do you like it?

I have the Valentine 1 and I love it. One of my best mods to date. Its detection is as good as the other top 2, but the V1 is the only radar detector with the arrows that show you where the cop is. The arrows have saved me numerous times!
