Why not to drive with your cell phone.

Car:2002 Corvette Z-06 Description:It is amazing that the driver of this Corvette survived without any injuries. More amazingly, he is 6 foot 3 inches tall. What happened is that he had just purchased this car a few weeks prior and was driving it around a parking lot when his phone fell into the passenger seat. As he was reaching over to get it, he looked up and saw that he was heading towards the parked trailers. He panicked and floored the accelerator instead of the brakes and slammed straight into the trailers. He survived simply because he was leaning over to get his cellphone. wreckedexotics.com

sounds like BS to me.How fast could he be going in a lot? Second, I find it hard to believe he hit the gas, not the brake.

some people panic. during 9/11 people were jumping off 80+ floors up in the air. humans do odd things when they are scared.in his defense. the article doesn't say he was on the phone. he was reaching for his phone. maybe his phone had just rang.

i don't know all the facts since i wasn't there.but i offer you this scenario.the phone is sitting in the center console. the phone rings. uually i ook at the caller id when this happens. so with this i assume he does too. as he is picking up the phone, it slips off his hand. natural reaction is to reach for it as it's falling. i know this situation. my first accident as a l;icensed driver was under similar factors.personally, i don't think it's stupid to look at your phone while driving. people do the same with radios at a much higher rate. but when something happens, you have to own up to it. it really is ridiculous to blame cell phones for distractions when other things cause much more distractions more frequently.i wouldn't call this guy stupid or anything. i'm sure he learned his lesson and is feeling his loss.but hey.. this is opinion.this is coming from someone who has been known to have road rage.

Did you not learn from this yourself that messing with your phone while driving is a dumb idea?Really, your phone calls are not so important as to endanger the lives of yourself or others on the road.Quote, originally posted by mcgusto82 »it really is ridiculous to blame cell phones for distractions when other things cause much more distractions more frequently. You just said you got into an accident yourself because you were messing with your phone!! How can you possibly turn around and then say it's "ridiculous" to blame cell phones for distractions?!?!?!?Of course there are other distractions to drivers. Does that make it wrong to try and remove one of the distractions facing them? I think not. Anything that can be done to remove any distraction is a worthwhile effort.Just because there are worse terrorists and plenty of them than some guy planting an IED along a Baghdad road, does that mean it's ridiculous to fault him for inciting terror and trying to kill civilians and US personnel?Quote, originally posted by mcgusto82 »i wouldn't call this guy stupid or anything. i'm sure he learned his lesson and is feeling his loss. But apparently you haven't learned your lesson from your own accident. Can you not hear yourself?

(and maybe the trucker)it is unhuman to expect us to live forever. we will one day die. if he picked his phone to see who was calling. so what? he made a mistake he now has to live with. but i won't label him stupid.better yet, why don't we just make it illegal for the driver to have access to all distractions. make it a seperate compartment from the rest of the cabin.

Every so often I'll read in the paper how someone hit the gas, instead of the brake - and end up wiping out a wall, storefront window, crowd of people...It happens, there's no fix... just hope they didn't breed and won't drive anymore. The guy was lucky if he survived, but even at 6'3" I bet he wouldn't have to duck very far down - you're not exactly sitting high in a 'vette

Assume makes an....... well, out of me in this case anyway. *flushes red*I have also seen those studies where they show the conversation, not the holding of the phone, is the main distraction.Perhaps you have a point about rushing to judgement too. Still, I think trying to retrieve anything from the floor (or backseat) of the vehicle while driving isn't a bright idea.

IMMIDEATELY i slapped it away. some people say that was dumb. it was natural reaction.
