The WAVE of new people

Post by Atomb »

It looks like the Vibe (and GenVibe) are getting more popular...which is great! But over the last few months you have probably noticed that 75% of threads are along the lines of introductions...i wonder if there's a way to handle all the new introductions without filling up the entire Vibe Lounge area with dozens of 'new here' and 'just bought a vibe - hi' type threads.i think it's important to welcome all new members, and maybe a specific section for introductions is a solution? Not sure....but i'm sure we can all brainstorm a little.

I think a "New Members Post Here for Introductions" section would be a good idea.

would it be possible to set it up so that as soon as a new member signs up and goes to the forum, it automatically dumps them into a 'new members' section to post their hello? maybe prompt them to post there and say hello?or better, during the sign up phase, have a message box where they can type up a short introduction and THAT gets put into the 'introductions section' automatically?

It should be up to them if they want to give any kind of introduction and what kind of intro they want.PS- I also don't share the concern about intro threads in the Vibe Lounge. I don't see this is as a problem.

Yeah, I'm with you... Not too keen on automagically forcing an introduction, that would creep me out if I were a newbie. I've never had much of a problem with the new folks stopping by to say hi in the loung or what not... I'm always glad to see new folks arrive.

I think just a thread would be fine. I don't think automatically making them post would be cool, it is usually best to lurk for awhile anyway.

I'm always glad to see new folks arrive.i wasn't too sure on the 'force an intro' either, but like somebody said once (can somebody place this paraphrase?) brainstorming is when we all sit around rejecting each other's ideas!i'm always glad to see new members too! by all means, this site gets better with more people as we have more examples, etc. whenever there's a question/comment....my concern is the repetative nature of the dozens of 'HI!' threads in the Lounge and the way it drowns out some other interesting discussions/polls/etc.i seriously believe that the new members that want to introduce themselves SHOULD introduce themselves...i'm just thinking that i don't want the Lounge to one day be nothing but 'intro' threads....i'm not sure i like the isolation of intro threads either as odds are it won't really be followed/noticed properly...so now it's time to think outside the box. my 'forced intro' was just a bad attempt at thinking outside the box.......anybody else have a better idea?

in many other forums there is a separate area specifically for new members: introductions, rules of the forum, FAQ's, info about mods and where to find them, SEARCH function, etc. why not do something like that here? We've grown enough to warrant that.
