GM Lease Ads

Say a full page newspaper ad today for various GM Lease "Deals" on 2006's. The mileage allowance at the quoted prices were 10,000 per year. Another thing about lease ads that I find annoying is the fine print that discloses the amount down, bank fee, disposition fee etc. When you buy a can of peas at the grocery the shelf tag tells you the cost per ounce. When you get a loan, there is a requirement to disclose the apr which includes all of the fees. There ought to be a requirement that the ad include a total cost per month in type at least half the size of the featured monthly lease payment. [Anyone can lease you a new Cadillace for $9.95 a month for 36 months if you pay a $20,000 cap cost reduction fee up front.]

JakeHave you seen the total printed in large type for any other automotive manufacturer? Would you feel better if GM priced the vehicle by weight or volume? Pontiac Vibe, $9.95 per pound, Pontiac GTO, $9.95 per pound, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, $19.98 per pound.

Hey - I'm not just picking on GM - they ALL do it! You gotta admit an ad that features the monthly lease figure by itself is useless information. In Ohio the Attorney General has a set of auto advertising regaultions that are largely ignored. Several years ago I did get them to back me on an ad that offered "Any xxxxx $3,000 off list price." The dealer then used the price before package discounts - not the MSRP. The AG's regs said list price = msrp. I got a check for about $700.
