I need to get chains for my tires soon, and don't know ANYTHING about this. Any recommendations?

Autozone normally sells tire chains in the winter. I'd check with them first. On the why don't you just buy snow tires thing, I can tell you chains are a lot less expensive than tires and if you only need them every once in awhile I wouldn't buy tires.

They are really steel cables that go over the tires rather than the old style chains. After the one winter of use I was pleased with how they worked. Just remember that they are noisy and hurt fuel economy.

I need chains for the "just in case" situation. We don't get much snow in Vancouver, but sometimes I like to drive into the interior or over to Whistler on the spur of the moment and would like to have some chains just in case
