okay, i've been trying clutchless shifting and i'm getting pretty ok at it...there's no grinding noise and only sometimes do i get a slight lurch when the car is put into the new gear...i was wondering if this is hurting my car at all...if it is, i'll stop doing it, it's just kinda interesting to do...any one know?

Please explain to me how to shift w/o a clutch I am new to manual transmissions. My wife has finally stopped making fun of me. No more stalling it only took me one week. to learn. But it would be cool to teach her something and look at her and say "What ya gonna do now"

to shift without the clutch all you really have to do is let it rev high and pull the shifter out of gear, and when you go into the next gear higher you can feel the synchros line up and you can put it in gear w/o using the clutch. to downshift you take out of gear like normal, but since the clutch helps with grabbing your engine will not let you go into the lower gear with/out revving the engine so you have to rev the engine a little to downshift. this kind of shifting is not reccomended, but it can be done, if your car is hi revving like the vibe's are, and you get good clutchless shifts down its actually quicker than the standard way to do it. just be wary of blowing a shift in a race and causing valve damage which is not nice and expensive to fix.thats all from hereyogi

This kind of shifting is very very hard on your trany. You'll end up paying for this end the end with your synchros going out and it will be very difficult to even shift when using the clutch.Learn to shift fast using the clutch. It's not that hard.

cool...thanks for the advice, that's exactly why i wanted to bring it up...i was fooling around with it and i wasn't sure what it was doing to my car...i guess i'll go back to shifting fast normally...

It wears a clutch plate down (much like brake pads) instead of thrashing the trans, when you use your clutch. It allows slow and steady tranfer of power from the engine to trans. When you shift clutchless, you send all the power at once, and will pay for it in repairs.

Don't do that... It can void your warranty.

It can only void your warrenty if they figure out what you did.

yeah it is really bad on it people do it usually in old beaters or every once and a great while i would stop

We used to play with clutchless shifting on the 1955 (!) Plymouth that was used as the hired hands car on the farm at which I worked after freshman year of college. We ended up slipping the shift linkage off the transmission, resulting in no shifts, clutchless or not. Three snotty college kids at the side of the road trying to reconnect the linkage before The Boss found out.

Gentlemen…..now I want you to downshift without a clutch. Pull it out tap the gas and drop it down. Let me know how you do….
