i did a search on where the vibe is built. i found some results stating it's built in CA, san fansisco. al nice and dandy, blah blah..BUT! the VIN says 5. the 1st number is a 5. the first number being where the car was finally assembled.can anyone explain this???

Um...it comes from California...and I think the 5 just signifies that its final assembly took place in the United States, whereas any car with a VIN starting with "J" was assembled in Japan, and so on. The U.S. has several numbers assigned to it, but I'm not sure at the moment exactly what they are.

iwas not aware of the usa had more than one prescribed designation. i thought 1 was the us code.from what i know, every other country has only one designation code.

The vehicle make digit (2nd digit in vin) is somewaht dependent on the first digit. Since the current VIN system was implemented way back in 81, my guess is that 1 and 4, the 2 original US codes, were insufficient to handle the brands that have come to light since 81. Most american GM cars start with 1G, but in this case, it is 5Y. Lincoln uses 5L in their VINs, so again, 5 is not uncommon. I would like to know the history of how a guy from Japan and a guy from America got together and decided to make the Vibe. was it a concept a planned thought a twinkling in someone's eye? what?

The Vibe was conceived as a GM brand vehicle from the start of the joint venture, and it was the foreign car maker who then decided to put out a model of their own.

Just for fun, and because I love old cars, I've been interested in finding information on the history of the Fremont plant before the GM/Toyota partnership. The 1963-1982 years!A number of famous GM vehicles rolled off the line in those years like the Chevy Impala, Camaro, Olds 442/Cutlass, etc.Also, the Vibe is not the first Pontiac to come from Fremont. Here are two GTO's, a '65 and a '70, that were built there:Like our Vibes, the the seventh from last digit in the VIN is a "Z" to indicate the Fremont plant origin.

Dad had a '68 Chevelle SS 396 that he bought new, his first new car... I believe it came from Fremont as well.Looked an awful lot like that in the attachment except it had a white interior..

The guy in high school that I was totally in love with had a car just like that. Ahh, you sent me back a few years. That car totally rocked, I loved it. I wonder whatever happened to his car.

And I bet their paint was better than ours!!
