high RPMs with cruise control?

Until the Vibe, I've never owned a car with cruise control before, so forgive me if this is a "rookie" question. When using CC on a highway, when you hit a small incline in the road, is it supposed to rev up past 5000 RPMs while it tries to hit it's desired speed? This happened FREQUENTLY during my recent highway drive and it absolutely KILLED my gas mileage. I thought CC was supposed to help fuel economy, but with it revving past 5000 RPMs every time the road inclined slightly, I was out of gas in no time at all. Just wondering if this is just the way CC works, or if i'm doing something wrong. Thanks!

What model Vibe? (base, GT, AWD)Was the A/C on?If Base/AWD and the A/C on, then yes, this seems to happen as the load of the A/C seems to reduce the output of the engine. When I notice I'm coming up to a decent incline, I'll take it out of Cruise and handle the acceleration myself. It's a pain, but just the way the engine works.
