Hey everyone. So I need some help - I was cleaning and re-oiling my K&N filter and I noticed that the foam seal around a flap in the air box was loose and falling off. I have 2 questions: 1) what is the flap for?2) is this a problem? Thanks for the help gen vibers you rock.

That's the butterfly. Closed at low throttle and RPM and opens by vacume actuation at about 3800 RPM when you step on it. Let in more air and makes the stock intake less restrictive. It's a 2 stage intake that gives more torque below 3.5k due to the restriction and then lets in enough air for high RPM HP when the butterfly opens. The foam is probably to help seal it when closed. If throttle response isn't instantanious in the lower revs then you need to fix the foam. Did oil get on it?

Yeah, that's what it looked like. I was a little "over zealous" the first time I oiled my filter and I've since backed off quite a bit, but I think some oil did get on it and maybe is causing the adhesive to separate. Also, as shown in the picture, it's horizontal when the car is off. Is the horizontal position the open position or is the vertical? It seems like the foam is designed to seal the door when it is vertical, so shouldn't the "resting state" of the door be vertical? Maybe I'm all turned around on this. I appreciate the help.

It will close as soon as you start the car.Once everthing is cool again, run the filter in for a couple hundred miles and clean the oil fron the MAF and surrounding intake as it sounds like it also has to be oiled up. Reset ECU and it should also run better.
