Cruise Control Malfunctioning 2005 Vibe

I've had my '05 Vibe for 2 weeks and tried the CC to find that it cuts out by itself. I set it and then while going down the highway, it just stops working. The CC light is still on, but the speed keeps going down and I have to step on the gas to get going again. I think it may be the stop lamp switch in front of the brake pedal, because when I hold my foot under the brake pedal, it doesn't do it as quickly. Once in a while, the door open idiot light is on after I start the car until I open and close the doors until it goes away. Maybe related?

Sounds like your problem is electrical with what your describing. We had a problem on our Chrysler with the vacuum on the cruise not holding, and had very similar problem with it decelerating. What happens if you tap the resume when it starts slowing down?

As far as the door idiot light- I've had that happen to me several times and finally figured out what it was: The hatch button on my remote and/or the dash button was getting bumped and the hatch was unlatched. Since there's no "beep", and the hatch itself barely moves when unlatched, I didn't notice it except for the idiot light.I think your idea of the brake pedal switch being the cause of your CC problems sounds very likely.

Thanks. Yes, I operate the control the same way, I've had it on 3 previous Toyotas (a corrolla and 2 tacomas).

I went out and tested it again this evening and the result was 20-25 miles of no problem, then I exited the expressway and got back on heading back with 10 failures on the return trip. Each time the CC would stop functioning and the speed would slow down (>10mph) and I hit the resume and it got back up to speed. About 4 or 5 times the slowdown came immediately after a discernable bump in the road. The first part of the trip had some bumps also, but it didn't kick out. The door open idiot didn't come on at all, so it probably is unrelated. I did make an appointment with the dealer's service shop. Why they can't come out and look at it for 10-20 minutes to diagnose it, especially with all the details I provided I don't know. They could have at least looked at the stop light switch and ruled it out, maybe. I have to leave it at the shop all day, but to balance it out, they're providing a loaner so I won't be stranded all day. Thanks for all the input, I'll be sure to post the results of the repair when it gets done. (I just hope I don't get a "No Problem Found" report....)

No offense dude, but if dealer techs took "5 minutes" to quickly diagnose everyone's problems, they would never get to break away and start actually doing work on other cars.

Agreed, for non-specific concerns (I hear a noise....), but for a detailed description that's right down to it, 10 minutes would have been fair and maybe even resulted in resolution. If it isn't the switch, then a more complete diagnostic would be fine, but if it is the switch, it could've been resolved without leaving the car for the whole day.

Don't forget, you aren't the only '10 minute quick-fix' the shop sees in a day. When I was working at Circuit City, people never understood that there are appointments, larger jobs, holdovers, and all kinds of other things that influence just when we get to your '10 minute' job. Leaving the car all day is quite reasonable, in that respect.

You said you exited then had the problem. Did you reset the cruise or just resumed it? The cruise gets blanked out if you slow down below 35 I believe.

You can set it below that speed, but if your going 50mph and set it and then slow down below 35 it will clear the memory.

I did the resume after re-entering the expressway and the speed went back to what is was accordingly. Then after each bump, it would kick out again. Resume would cause it to get back to speed again. I'm still thinking the switch, but it may not be if there are other vibration sensitive parts of the system. The 10 minutes thing again: If the shop is that busy pulling in all those big bucks, maybe they could have someone full time that does the 10 minute checks. I would be a whole lot more comfortable leaving it all day if it were at least looked at first. Especially if it turns out to be a NPF (no problem found) because of not knowing something about the operation or something. It really makes putting off a visit so much easier-- i.e. don't take it in unless you really have to.Another side note to how busy they are: I test drove (2) 2005 Vibe GT's yesterday with a friend that was looking at them, the first one had a Check Engine light stuck on (didn't make it out the lot), the second had air conditioning that only blows hot air (a sales rep was with us for both). Maybe that's why the shop's so busy???????

Repair done! I suspect the culprit was the switch on the clutch pedal. There was about 1/8" or so of free play at the top which was probably just enough to cause the switch to say to the computer "The clutch pedal is being pressed!", even though it wasn't. I gave it an extra 1/2 turn, and then road tested it again with Zero failures this time. The real clue was I tried to engage the CC today and nothing happened, even when I put my foot under the brake pedal tried to lift it. I tried the same on the clutch pedal and it worked!Time will tell it this really fixed it, but I'm still cancelling my appointment with Mr. Goodwrench for Monday! Anything to stay out of the shop!Combined highway and city mileage is 33.3 mpg for tonights' fill up!!!
