2005 Vibe AWD, Loaded. Neptune. Love the car. Got a great deal. Right now getting between 20 and 22 mpg's city. Just turn 1800 miles. I live in a hilly area. Service Manager said to give the car time to adjust to my driving style. How should I handle the overdrive?

Quote, originally posted by Flash711 »How should I handle the overdrive?Don't mess with it if you don't need to. The car defaults to O/D on mode. Pressing the O/D button disables overdrive, esentially, downshifting you to 3rd gear. It is unnecessary to do that unless you are climbing a hill, passing, or doing something that requires additional kick. Normal driving you should be in as high a gear as possible when cruising -- in the case of the auto, that would be 4th. And as to economy, give the engine around 5,000 miles to break in. I didn't notice dramatic improvements until 7,000 miles. Many on here, however, have learned that, as the engine continues getting older, you can continually see improvements in economy. Of course, that's not representative of everyone.

Looking back to my initial 4 months/1,275 miles mostly city [1/27/03 to 4/22/03]. Right at 25 mpg. Probably 26 mpg mostly city now with 14,500 miles. At this rate the car will be 8 years old before I hit 50,000 miles. Wonder if there will be a Pontiac Vibe in the 2011 model year with the recently announced changes coming at GM.

RagingFish did you mean to say that you got always drive with the O/D on .But in the owners manual it says that O/D does definetly give more acceleration and more initial push but it drains on the mileage .Could you plz clarify that for me .I am kind of lost if whether i should be driving with the O/D always enabled ?? BTW i drive a base ;4 speed auto .

If your pulling a hill, turn it off, if your driving on a flat, turn it on.

I am not sure what your seasons are like in West Virginia, but I noticed a strong seasonal dependence in my mileage. In the winter months, over the last 2 years, I have only been able to get around 22 mpg. That's driving mostly highway. In the summer months, I have gotten numbers around 28 mpg traveling the same routes.

Welcome to the club. The only thing I use my OD switch for is to drop down a gear to slow me down to the speed limit so the nice officer doesn't see my brake lights.
