you'd lose the steering wheel lock, if that is a theft deterrent you care about. I haven't found that the location of the ignition switch gets in the way of anything. How is it in the way for you?

The electrical part wouldn't be too extensive... But.You'd have to forego wheellock, and perhaps shiftlock (if you have an automatic). Plus unless you're good at fabricating, you'd have to make a new hole, a new way to mount an ignition, and cover up the old hole. Not impossible..but curious why you'd want to?

I think he wants to make it look like the Saab's. They have that feature. With the ignition in the center console.Inder

If it helps, the auto's shift lock is electric. found that out when I left the dome on for 3 days and then needed the car in nuetral to push it to the truck. Luckily I knew what the little hole next to the shifter was for. After the Vibe was running, I checked the wiring diagram and verified it was a solenoid release.

That's a good idea... Get the 'start' button from a Prius. Very cool. I hated my Malibu, but damn it had one feature I just loved dearly - ignition switch on the dash. IMHO, that's where it belongs. Easy to get to and out of the way. After being spoiled, I now have really grown to hate the ignition switch being on the column. To me, the only advantage it has over the switch being on the dash is the fact that you can reach in through the window and turn the ignition on... Other than that, blah, hate it.

Probably it's like Toyota's setup in the Prius. I believe you just hit the start button to turn it off. Ugh, just like Windows, click start to shut the thing off. lol!I do like the idea of a high tech ignition with a proximity dector... Just have your "key" anywhere - in your pocket even, and you can still drive the car.
