How to remove window tint

I got a fix-it Ticket this weekend. The Trooper was going the other direction and turned around to pull me over. I was not speeding(this time), all my lights work, and I was not cranking the tunes(this time). I knew the side tint was too dark. When I had it done I asked for one shade darker than legal. The Trooper said it was at least 3 shades too dark, So I need info on removing tint. Any help out there? A local tint shop charges $50 hour to do the job!

Go to your local hardware store and get a razor scraper and scrape it all off. It will take awhile.

Found this site with pretty decent instructions, since I'm too lazy to type them up myself (been in your shoes)http://www.doityourselftint.co...l.htmOne thing I'd add to have handy is either adhesive remover or nail polish remover.

Thanks for the replys. I figured there'd be a fair amount of scraping. I guess I'll be the local expert when I'm done

Just curious, but why get your tint specifically "one shade darker than legal" if you know it's going to be illegal? Seems it might have been worth it to just make sure the tint was legal and save yourself a lot of effort and wasted cash.

Considering how many cars I see with tinted driver/passenger windows, not many subscribe to that thinking...

Use some rubbing alcohol after you peel the rest of the tint off, that and a toothbrush. That's what I did for the vibe and it ended up good as new.Inder

I was told when I got my tint never to use a window cleaner with ammonia because it'll peel the tint right off... They said thats what they use to remove exhisting tint. Oh and I have 5% all around cause I like it. Tint laws hmpf wish our politicians could fight real crime with their laws. BTW if I am anywhere other than a high speed freeway, and I'm near a PO PO, I just roll my front windows down

70% is legal in NY and it's very light. This is the third car in 6 years that I've had tinted this way and figured that as long as I don't get a speeding ticket they(police) won't mess with me about the tint. I figured they'd have better things to do, like ticket people talking on their cell phones! I could have a garage just sign off on the ticket, but with my luck, i'd get pulled over again and they'd see that I was recently ticketed for it. A co-worker of mine got a ticket for his tint last year($100), so I'll just go the straight an narrow for now. Thanks for the tips, I'll be using them this weekend.

Im not allowed to have tint on the front windows but hey it looks better with tint. Had it for about a year and have not been pulled yet. My bro did same thing and he got pulled over about 2 months after he got it done. He had to remove it. It was easy taking the film off but to take the glue off it was a b***! We used lighter fluid and scrapping. Tried gasoline but didnt do as god as lighter fluid. Still lots of scrapping.

It may look better, but is it really worth it if you do get pulled over and have to scrape it all off? Seems it might be more cost effective to just go with legal or not tint at all if you don't like what is legal...then again that's just the humble opinion of one stick-in-the-mud.

in all seriousness, i had the same thing happen to me. i had limo tint (95% tint) on all windows in an Z71 chevy i had. had to get it off for a ticket. one of the best things you can do is to leave the car with the windows up, in a super sunny parking lot of something, which will heat the glue up, and then makes it easier to pull off. really not a hard job, but you will need some goo-gone after you peel the tint off. good luck.(and for those of you who wonder why he would get darker then legal tint, it is because it looks so much cooler!) yeah.

Well I took the tint off this weekend. I learned a lot from taking the first one off. On the first window I took a Razor and lifted the corner and just peeled back the tint. Then I took 409 and sprayed and scraped for about 30 min. The second window I sprayed the edges of the tint before I pulled the tint. Then I sprayed the tint as I was slowly pulling the tint. I'd say 95% of the adheasive came with the tint, so I only had about 5min of scraping afterwards. What sucked was after I finished I went to the store and rolled down my windows and when I rolled them back up I had glue streaks on the windows from glue I had missed from the first window. I think I'm going to leave it this way for a while.

I'm kinda late on this but here is an easy way to remove tint with minimal scraping. This is especially helpful on rear windows with defrost.First off, it needs to be sunny outside. Park your car with whatever side you are going to start on pionting towards the sun. Now, take a black garbage bag and split the sides so you have a big rectangle. Spray a window down with water or Windex if you prefer. Stick the garbage bag to the wet window, smooting out any big wrinkles.Let the window 'sweat' for about 15 minutes or so and remove the garbage bag.Roll the window down a bit. Using a razor blade, pick up the corner of the tint and carefully peel it down. This will remove about 99% of the adhesive with the tint. This is probally the most effective method of removing tint. About two years ago here, the state changed tint laws and we re-tinted a buttload of cars
