I know many of us chose the Vibe because of its Japanese, therefore quality, background (dont say anything Colonal Panic ). Well the assembly plant is in Calif USA and I see that from this online article http://www.herald-dispatch.com...1.htm that the Vibe/Matrix engine is made in Buffalo USA.I am curious...are there any cars destined for N Americal that are built in Japan?

That is gret news! I bought my Vibe because it was a Pontiac first and even with the Toyota drivetrain, it was in part an American car. Now knowing that both the body and the drivetrain were "made in America" that really helps make me feel good about my pyrchase. Thanks

It's ok, I'll play nice. My car isn't exactly "normal." hehAFAIK, Toyota builds these in the states: Camry, Corolla, Tundra, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, maybe more - not sure... That leaves things like the RAV4, Echo (if they still make that,) 4Runner, etc. etc... Those may be made in Japan, I dunno. The Prius definitely comes from nowhere other than Japan though, I do know that.

Toyota Matrix is made near Woodstock/Ingersol southern Ontario Canada. The Vibe is UAW assembled and is considered U.S. built, hence, it fall under the approved vehicle list of many Union collective aggreements' regarding car allowances.Ford has factories making the Focus in Mexico and the U.S. Parts come from anywere?? Think global....

SAAB 92X = Subaru WRX...If I remember correctly, 85% of the car is built in Japan. Check the origin of parts sticker on the car. It's usually next to the sticker on a new car at the dealership. Funny world we live in now......and I think it's all because of Cable TV, Internet, and Cellphones.

To be sure the vehicle you are buying is assembled in the United States, check the window sticker, which will list the location of final assembly, and the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), which is attached to the driver's side of the dashboard. A VIN beginning with "1," "4" or "5" means the vehicle was assembled in the United States.

If the first character is a "J" then the vehicle comes from Japan. It it is a 1, 4 or 5 then it comes from the US. There may be (and probably are) other prefixes that designate a vehicle made in the US. I know Honda uses "1H" for their American-built cars, but I don't know for sure what WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier) Toyota uses in the U.S. but here is an interesting chart:

Yep, I've used the VIN many a years to figure out where someting was made... I fought with my sister who swore up and down the '94 Camry she bought new was Kentucky built... Nope, VIN started with a J. Funny, she bought it at a dealer in Lexington, just a few miles from the Georgetown plant where they made Camrys.
