Today I got the VIN # of my soon to be delivered Vibe. Here how it starts: 5Y2SL668.....I thought the 7th digit was the safety restraints either 2 or 4. So what does 6 mean?

You are correct 7th digit of the vin is a restraint code.6 = Active (manual) belts w/drivers and passenger inflatable restraints(front and side) automatic occupant sensor (passenger)

I see that in
http://www.gmgoodwrench.com/gm...S.pdfDoes that mean on 2005's, there is a sensor that keeps the passenger side airbags from deploying if nobody is in the seat, and on earlier models (like my 2003 with side air bags that has a 4) all the airbags go even if nobody is in the passenger seat?Hey mods, add option 6 to Nova's post in

Our 05 activates/de-activates the bag based on weight in the seat.

I think my 04 does as well just it doesn't say. I was always told that the older vehicles with passanger side airbags detected them with the seatbelts in place... examples being montana vans with the airbag light on because the sensr in the seatbelt was not working properly. Now that was for the driver but I have no idea about the Vibe one.Now our new Legacy actually has above the radio a passanger side airbag light that switches off as soon as the seatbelt is removed and switches to on when you sit down and buckle up.

Btw, our Vibe was built the week of April 18th 2005 and if the last 5 digits, after the 4, indicate the # of Vibes produced this year than over 66,000 Vibes have been built so far.
