We've seen lots of threads re Cold Air Intakes, but take a look here for the opposite extreme:

So what would you say actually happened there, MadBill? It looks like the nitrous blew back through the intake and ignited, blowing most of the intake system apart. A really big backfire, maybe? It doesn't seem to have destroyed the motor, it was still running after the explosion.

I don't think it was actually running after the big bang; more like coasting down in gear on the inertia rolls. Basically, it suffered a ruptured intake manifold and assorted hoses. Such explosions are not uncommon with nitrous, usually caused by a lean mixture burning so slowly that it lights off the fresh charge when the intake valve next opens. A misfire can do the same thing, when the unburned mixture is lit off by a hot spot in the exhaust and burns back into the cylinder. A late model EFI engine with a 'wet' nitrous system (extra fuel added at the throttle body rather than via longer injector pulses) and a large manifold volume has the makings of a much bigger bomb than a carbureted engine!
