I want a 6-speed in my base...more than anything lol!!!!!If I were to find a tranny at teh junk yard or something, what would I have to buy in order for it to work? I know I'd need a new ECU but what else? How much money are we lookin at NOT including installation.

You have a base automatic, or a base stick? Tranny swaps aren't all that uncommon. Other than the computer, and changing to a flywheel instead of a flex plate, you'd need to add the clutch pedal, and I think that's more or less it. One of my buddies swapped out his engine and tranny in a 92 240sx with a SR-20 with a stick, it took him a couple of days. The fact that it's a six instead of a five doesn't matter to the car. So if you already have the stick shift, it should just be the tranny. It's probably the same physical size and connections.

Hey wicked, you must not be awake yet or thinking Celicas. The biggest problem that I see with the swap is that the gearing just wasn't set up for a base. You would be lucky to reach 50 MPH in second gear. 2 shifts to 60 and 3 in the 1/4 will offset the some of the gains of lower gearing. If you want it to autocross it's probably good but the powerband of the 1zz may not warrant that swap unless you have an auto and are going to get a manual anyway. Sounds like you have an auto so get an ECU from a junk yard. Any other ECU options are way expensive. Personally I would prefer lift happened at 5k on my GT so that it would only need a five speed but i'm not complaining.

So would I be able to get a 5 speed? I saw that tranny on ebay that's why I asked lol Thanks for posting it anyways though! I don't wanna tradae my car because this is my baby. My first car and I don't think I'm ever going to sell it. I'll buy new cars but I'm allways going to keep this one.

I'd think you'd lose a lot of power going to a 6 speed in a base....right?

I don't care about power, I just wanna be in control of the car.

You care about power, let's be real here Paul. But seriously, I would just swap it out with the Base Vibe 5-speed tranny.Inder

I'd think the swap out to a 5 speed would be super easier then to a six speed. Your speedo and everything would be super screwed w/ the six.

Bases redline at what?...6300 stock, 6700 with the TRD chip? That means a base with a 6sp XRS/GT tranny would top out near the following speeds:1st - ~32mph2nd - ~47mph3rd - ~68mph4th - ~86mph5th - ~115mph6th - ~142mph

Awsome, so the base 5-speed would be do-able? How much would it all cost including ecu?

Whatever the cost at the yard on that rear ended Matrix/Vibe.

I think you would also need the wiring harness. But if it could be done fairly reasonable.I would go with a 6spd.Then if you were supercharged you Should be able to beat a GT in a race.

I think the base car would be better with a 6spd the ratios in the 5spd suck.1,2,3 are ok but 4 is to tall should have been closer like my Si even 5 could have been shorter. I would have given up 4mpg to have a shorter 5th gear.On a hilly road speed limit at 80kph so i am doing 90kph with the air on the car is a slug I usally drive in 4th,5th beening to tall

umm... maybe it was going without saying but...clutch pedal, clutch master cylinder, clutch and flywheel (if they didn't come with the tranny), clutch lines

Yeah I think the clutch pedal would be hte hardest part I gues this idea has been shot to hell....WHY DIDNT I GET A STICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well if you have the money, you could go for the sequential 6-speed from a mr2 spyder, no clutch. the only downside is that the transmission is about $1500. but this tranny is made to be mated to the 1zz.
