IN THE NEWS: A man barely escaped serious injury Thursday (2/16/05)after a lit cigarette he tried to toss out the window while driving across the Bay Bridge blew back in and ignited the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol... Carried by the wind, the cigarette landed in his back seat and almost immediately burst into flames. The man quickly pulled to the side of the road, and leapt from the flame-filled SUV, which continued rolling into a guard rail, [CHP Officer Shawn Chase] said. 'He thought he had thrown it in park, but he didn't and it just kept going,' the officer said. 'It was in flames by the time he got out. He had some of his hair singed on the back of his head. It burnt down to the frame. There was nothing left.'"

If not a sunroof, then you should at least not carry the 10 gallon jug of emergency gasoline in the back seat. LOL

They don't give a damn that they're polluting YOUR air, and the last thing they'll do is pollute their own by using an ashtray or even holding the lit cig INSIDE their car. Man, that pisses me off...they choose to pollute themselves, yet no matter what, they end up polluting me as well...even while driving with my windows down Sorry, but that assmunch deserves what he got

So this happened in California?Let's see...$1000 fine for littering and a felony offense for throwing a lit object from a moving vehicle. All because he couldn't use the ashtray.Sunroof = ~$400.00Ashtray = ~$2.99Hey! Let's hope he starts another California wildfire, burns 1000's of homes and kills 100's of people!

With all the rain we've been getting, there is not much chance at that this month. This summer will likely be a bad fire season when all the growth caused by the rain dries out.

come on folks. if you shoot fireworks on the 4th, then complain about smokers throwing cig butts, you are a hypocrite. that is, unless you scour a 4 block radius looking for all the bottle rockets you shot off.

First off, I don't light fireworks, but regardless...are you seriously saying that lighting fireworks one day a year is just as bad as littering cigs 365 days a year? Also, bottle rockets are illegal in California due to the fire danger and ALL fireworks are illegal near the mountains due to the fire danger.

Around here, the loud music can get you a ticket. If your music can be heard 2 car lengths away, then the Johnson City Police Dept. will issue you a ticket. In Kingsport, it's 50 feet.I think there should be a law on the books about cigarette littering as well. They can issue tickets for littering anything else, so why not cigarette butts? There's an ashtary in the car, or you can buy one for your Vibe for what, $3? I've actually heard of incidents where burning cig butts thrown out of one car went into another car through an open window and caught *that* car on fire. Not to mention that cig butts are just nasty anyway. In general, littering behavior is rude and disrespectful to other motorists, fellow citizens, and the environment. You wouldn't throw a cigarette (removed) on the floor in your house or toss it out the window into your yard, so why do it on the road?

Fo shizzle? Ya mean if I buy a .8-mpg quarter-of-a-gazillion-dollar ACUFOCHEMERCODGEMC SUBGUMHUMSTERDITION SUV with the 1840 hp HEMITECORGHINI V-24 and 34" solid gold spinners, that dang on-board fire extinguishing system ain't even gonna douse a lousy smoldering reefer-ash that somehow blows back in at 145mph?What IS this world coming to? That'll really gonna hurt sales to rap stars, professional athletes, and drug lords!Oops! I thought this was the HUMOR forum!

I’m trying very hard not to sound condescending or pious because my intent is not to offend anyone, but rather explain my opinion. I guess we're both just playing the devil's advocate today. There are several words that come to mind when I read your comment: severity, gravity, seriousness, degree, intensity, etc. These words obviously have no meaning to you (based on your comments). Calling someone a hypocrite when they condemn an action based on its severity just because they participate in another secondary act, doesn’t make them a hypocrite. By your rationale, someone who drives a CNG vehicle that is 99.99% emission free is a "polluter" just like the person that drives a 1969 454 Chevelle. It is true, both pollute the air, but the severity is grossly apparent: The CNG vehicle will produce less pollution over it’s lifespan than the Chevelle will produce in one month. I’m not judging either. I’m just stating the fact that intensity of an action changes the "type" of action.BTW – obviously there are other pollution acts much worse than throwing a cigarette out the window, but saying it’s OK because others set off bottle rockets ignores the degree of the littering. Neither is OK, but one is worse than the other.

I'd like that law about a fine if a car radio/stero can he heard two car lengths away. A lot of times you can not only hear the music but feel the thumping of the bass. I was gassing up one day and the car next to me had not only extremely loud rap music playing but also extremely lewd (mother this and mother that) rap music playing. I restrained my self from saying anything for fear of my safety. Rude people who do that would likely punch you out or worse for complaining.

I get some of the strangest looks at red lights, gas stations, wherever I'm stopped and people can hear my music and look at me. Here I am, this little redheaded girl who looks a lot younger than I actually am, listening to D12, uncensored, and actually at many points rapping along quite loudly and forcefully. I say it like I mean it! When people ask me what I'm listening to on my iPod, if it's a rap artist, they go, "Wow, you listen to rap?" I haven't figured out yet what exactly I'm supposed to be listening to...Wonder if people are scared of me, or think I'm having some kind of identity crisis? Heh.

I know that a lit cigarette can start fires though, just I've never seen it. Since it happened in california, I',m surprised that there weren't a half dozen traffic choppers filming the whole thing.I met a trixer who smokes, and has a sunroof, and we found out that the ashes she flicks out the sunroof get in between the glass and the roof sheet metal, blow back along the headliner and collect in the two rear storage areas (the ones in the back where you can access the tail lights) Smoking owners of sunroofed vibes who flick ashes out the top ought to check there. Probably ashes all through the car in unseen (but not unsmelled) places.

It is possible for an entire car to burst into flames...Remember John Candy on the movie "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles"?

Back when I was a smoker (pre-1985), I had a cigarette ash (the tobacco kind LOL), blow back in the rear side window of a 4-dr sedan I was driving.Funny, but the back seat didn't immediately 'burst into flames'. It DID burn a small hole in the seat fabric, and SMOLDERED for a while on the foam rubber below, but no major flame-up.Same thing happened to my grandfather who was a cigar smoker, circa 1961. A lit ash fell on the front (bench) seat cushion and burned the fabric enough that he had the seat reupholstered, but STILL no major flame-up. I truly suspect this incident didn't occur EXACTLY as the driver indicated!I'm thinking this guy was tired of his lease...

I haven't ever had a car burn up from a cigarette... Now, the old Corsica I had, good grief - I was finding burns in the carpet UNDER the frront seats! And everywhere else for that matter - front seat, back seat, door panels, carpet, headliner, sun visors... Yes, I was a bit careless. If a car was going to ignite from a lit cigarette, my car should have. Yes, sometimes I threw them out the window. But usually - and this is disgusting, but worked - threw the thing in a cup from *insert fast food joint here* that had water down in the bottom. The Accent my friend used to own had to have had flame retardant seats. We both accidentally dropped lit cigarettes on the seats, and not once did they ever leave any evidence of that ever happening. lol! That dude in the SUV must have had a towel soaked with gas in the back seat. (removed)! He probably couldn't afford both gas for the SUV and smokes, so decided to kick one habit... I've since quit smoking, started back up, quit again, started back up, quit again... Even when I did smoke, I never smoked in the Vibe, not once... And threatened bodily harm upon someone who wanted to light up in the thing.

How often does some assmunch flick a (removed) out his window and it, or the sparks bounce up on your hood. Flicking is a classless, selfish, bonehead, stinking greaseball act. (removed) it out on your forehead and swallow it if you don't want to use your ash tray. Too bad that scumdog loser didn't die in the car fire.
