Question for the group

I have a dumb question for the group. When exiting the car with the doors locked (I have power locks) are you able to open the door by simply pulling the release handle or do you have to unlock the door manually to get it to open? Every vehicle I have driven lately allows the front passangers to exit by pulling the door latch regardless of whether or not the doors are locked. Thanks in advance for your help.DiveNut

Yeah, doesn't work on the Vibe. Most other toyotas do that, though. How much could getting rid of that save them?

How much could getting rid of that save them?Probably quite a bit when multiplied by the number of cars they manufacture in a year.I'm sure the ability to open from the inside even though the door is locked is probably a safety feature, so you can get out quickly in an emergency, even if the doors were locked. Takes out some of the danger of the "panic factor," which may prevent you, crazy as it sounds, from being able to unlock the doors because you're so distracted by your own panic. But, oddly enough, I have *never* driven a vehicle that had this feature. It's a good one though. Would keep people from trying to rip my door handles off when they try to get out without pressing unlock first.

Interesting, I never looked at that, but then again, I NEVER drive with the driverside door locked. How else am I to fall out and roll on the ground when I get hit from behind. "My neck, my back...my neck and my back."

I never really took any notice of it. So apparently it doesn't bother me.

I drove a Ford Tempo when I was a teenager and that one had the auto-open feature. No car I've driven since then had it... and it was only an annoyance when I was adjusting after the Tempo was gone. I've had my Vibe less than a month and hadn't yet been perturbed by it lacking that feature. What does annoy me is that my husband's Honda seems to randomly lock the passenger doors, so I'll KNOW I didn't lock it and try to jump out and get nowhere.
