Ohio, here I come!

Post by Kari »

Watch out southwest Ohio, there will be one more GenViber among you come August because today I received a letter informing me I have early admission and an assistantship to Miami University of Ohio! I'm so excited. That's where I really wanted to go, and now it's settled. I get my full tuition paid, plus a very large stipend in exchange for 20 hours a week of work. Can't beat that. It will probably be several hours before I calm down now...I'm thrilled! Yay! Sorry for the very off topic post; I just had to share!

Congrats on the new college. By the way, why do they call it Miami of Ohio? Does it actually have anything to do with the Miami U in Florida? Or is that just a way they thought they could get dumb football players to come to their school. These questions are half serious and half joking cause I have asked a lot of people and nobody seems to know. Maybe you could get me some inside info.

The one in Florida is the University of Miami, actually. Miami University is the actual name of the one in Ohio, but most people will put "Miami of Ohio" and ESPN puts "Miami-Ohio" so people won't confuse it with the one in Florida. (Although it was a college before Florida was a state, I believe. )It's called Miami after the Miami Indian tribe, which is native to the area. The mascot actually used to be the Redskins before some descendents of the Miami tribe asked that it be changed, and now it's the Redhawks. But the whole area is actually called the Miami Valley, and they named the university that to honor the Indian tribe. So no, no relation to Florida, and no desire to imitate.

Miami University of OhioQuote »Established 1809; named for the Miami Indian Tribe that inhabited the area now known as the Miami Valley region of OhioThe Miami RiverLink-->http://www.miami.muohio.edu/about_miami/EDIT: Kari, you beat me to it! The region is named 'Miami Valley' because of the Miami River that flows through the area into the Ohio River.Quote »Miami, River, United States (mm´, –) or Great Miami, river, c.160 mi (260 km) long, formed in W Ohio near Indian Lake and flowing generally SW past Dayton to the Ohio River at the Ind. line. The Miami River system has large-scale flood-control projects. The Miami and Erie Canal (c.240 mi/390 km long; opened in the 1830s) linked the upper Miami River with Lake Erie and was the principal transportation route of W Ohio until the 1850s. The Little Miami River (95 mi/152 km long) to the east and generally parallel, rises SE of Springfield and enters the Ohio River at Cincinnati. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition.
