Gas cap is coated in salt - Anyone else?

I've noticed that the design of the gas filler cap area seems to allow for salt and a lot of road grime to get into the gas cap filler area. This seems to be a ticket for potential problems later from salt and/or getting into the gas tank. My cap is coated with salt and the metal filler tube seems to be getting exposed to this corrosion. The problem seems easily solved if they would have not made the drain hole wide open to the elements below to the wheel well. They should have fashioned a screen or splash shield around the opening so the gas could drain out, but not so easy for the salt and water to get thrown up into the filler cap area.Has anyone else experienced the same problem and if so is there a fix for this?Cheers

I don't have a problem with salt getting in there since I live in the desert, but I get dirt and dust crusted in there every so often. We have dust storms out here periodically. Maybe there's a way to line the compartment with weather stripping?

Have not noticed anything out of the ordinary... Possibly your area uses too much salt?Make a gasket for you fuel door, I dunno...

Thanks Inder and the rest of your help guys.Being in Ottawa Canada, you can't see the pavement for all of the salt on the road. Safe to have clean roads, but the car sure takes a beating. I rustproofed the car just to be safe.Weatherstripping sounds like an idea too.I'll bring it into the dealership in the spring to see if anything can be done.

I filled up today in Ottawa and mine is covered in salt. I got the Vibe washed too and I bet it lost 10 pounds. The salt was falling off it in big sheets about 2mm thick. It's the first day the temperature went above freezing in about 3 weeks.
