Quote »Ford Recalls Nearly 800,000 Pickups, SUVsAssociated PressDEARBORN, Mich. - Ford Motor Co. is recalling nearly 800,000 pickups and sport utility vehicles because the cruise control switch could short circuit and cause a fire under the hood, the nation's second biggest automaker said Thursday. The recall affects approximately 792,000 Ford F-150 pickups, Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators from the 2000 model year. Also affected are 2001 F-Series Supercrew trucks that were made at the same time.Ford will notify owners of the recall in February, and dealers will deactivate the cruise control switch for free. Once the company has an adequate supply of replacement switches, it will send another letter notifying owners that they can get their switches replaced.Ford said cruise control will be disabled once the switch is deactivated."We recognize this may be an inconvenience, but we believe this preventive action is in the best interest of our customers' safety," the company said. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the defect in November after receiving 36 reports of fires. All of the incidents occurred when the vehicle was parked and the ignition was turned off. No injuries were reported.Ford said it worked closely with NHTSA throughout the investigation.Ford shares fell 16 cents to close at $13.19 in Thursday trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Its shares reached a 52-week low of $12.61 in October.

Oops! And that's just crappy, disabling folks' cruise control until a future date. But I guess it's for a good reason, so that soccer mom's Navigator won't burn up! (Personally, I say leave the crap connected and get some of these monsters off the road!) lmaoWhat's up with Fords catching fire? Seems to be pretty common over the last few years...

There was a thing on NBC news tonight...they showed one guy who's truck caught fire, the chassis was toasted, half his house burned up. It's made crazy stuff!I remember when my dad's GA had to have something in the ignition replaced because it MIGHT ignite if you over-crank the engine...but jeez, these ignite just from sitting there!

The news showed a guy in central Indiana whose truck burned up in his driveway, and scorched the front of his garage and house.I had an Escort with the amazing melting headlight switch syndrome. One night I was driving and I smelled burning plastic. Next thing I knew, all the lights were flashing on and off like crazy. Didn't catch fire, but it scared me silly. When I took it to the dealer, it was 'Yeah, we've seen quite a few of those melted down.' They replaced it for free, even though it was out of warranty. Years later, I think Ford finally did a recall.FORD = Fix Or Recall Daily???
