Quote »Top 10 Most Fuel-Efficient Cars for 2005By Edmunds.com EditorsDate Posted 10-19-2004We've compiled a list of the 10 most fuel-efficient cars currently sold in the U.S. based on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) miles-per-gallon ratings for city and highway travel. In order to arrive at a final hierarchy, we used the EPA's combined fuel economy formula: 55 percent of city mpg rating plus 45 percent of highway mpg rating. The rating for each vehicle below is expressed in mpg as a city/highway ratio. All ratings apply to base models equipped with a manual transmission, except where indicated otherwise with an asterisk. Also, we only allowed a given model to appear once on the list, except in the case of the Honda Civic because it's available in both gas-electric hybrid and regular gasoline versions. 1. Honda Insight — 61/66 2. Toyota Prius — 60/51* 3. Honda Civic Hybrid — 45/51 4. Volkswagen Golf TDI — 38/46 Volkswagen Jetta TDI — 38/46 Volkswagen New Beetle TDI — 38/46 5. Honda Civic HX — 36/44 6. Toyota Echo — 35/42 7. Toyota Corolla — 32/41 8. Scion xA — 32/37 9. Honda Accord Hybrid — 30/37* Pontiac Vibe — 30/36 Toyota Matrix — 30/36 Scion xB — 31/35* 10. Dodge Neon — 29/36 Toyota Celica GT — 29/36*

And most of my mileage is highway miles. I can't get the gas pedal off of the floorboard for some reason when I drive! I sure don't get that stated mileage or anywhere near it.

don't the three VWs count as 4, 5 and 6, making the Civix HX #7? That would put the Vibe in a tie for 11th place. so in the top ten, there are three hondas, three volkswagens, and four toyotasI get some satisfaction of owning the US branded vehicle with the best mpgs (although my 03 base was rated 29/36), but it is disappointing that there are not more US brand vehicles on the list. Interesting that the Vibe is the best US brand, but too bad it's only there because it is is a rebadged corolla wagon. Is the Dodge neon really a rebadged asian car too? Also interesting that the Prius is the only vehicle in the list to get better mpgs in city than highway.

OK, so this isn't even 'OFFICIAL' EPA ratings artificial though they are, it's Edmund's own re-jiggering of the EPA 'Laboratory-tested' numbers. And we Genvibe owners wonder why we aren't getting 'PUBLISHED' gas mileage ratings!!!With homage to ragingfish..."Before someone starts another thread, NO you probably WON'T get EPA fuel mileage ratings."

I get in the 30's when I keep the RPM's under 3k. But some of here have lead feet. Resulting in $hitty gas mileage. The most I have ever gotten is 37. and lowest I've gotten is 25. So, I'm not gonna complain. Still better than my old car. 11 most of the time and 18 on a good day.Inder

the ratings for the VW TDI are low. the listing said "base model with manual". The "official" ratings for the TDI are 40/49 and I know these are correct bercause I traded in my Golf TDI for my Vibe. I averaged 40 mpg city and 50 highway (at 70 mph), 50+ if you go slower, nearing 60mpg if you "could" drive 60mph on the interstate.

This next gas fill will be my first tank WITHOUT the intake in about 2 years. Curious to see how my numbers will change.I actually pulled off 34 mpg on one of the fills from my Michigan drive. Now I tend to average upper 20s to very low 30s (30-31) -- all with the intake. If I can get 33-34 without the intake, I'll be plesantly surprised.

Last few tanks: 16, 17, 20 MPG "mixed" city/highway (70% highway.)

Last road trip I took (1200km) I managed to get 6.9L/100km (40mpg) with a full load and the A/C on. With 5 passengers and a full hatch, there were times when I wanted to accelerate but found the accelerator already floored...nonetheless, that kind've mileage with that load really impressed me!

My last tank was 23.75, but that was in-town with the air on and a *heavy* foot. However, I usually get 30 to 34 mpg.
