Vibe staying in the garage today

It is "ugly" here in the central part of Ohio. We had freezing rain and sleet all night so all the trees and power lines have a thick coating of ice. There are 200,000 or so homes without power and it will be tomorrow before a lot of them get power back. A lot of homes in my neigborhood without power but so far ours is on but has "flickered" a few times. Wind is supposed to increase so that will knock some more lines out, plus more damage to homes from falling trees and tree limbs. Anyone without a garage is in a world of hurt as their car would be iced over big time, and it is just getting colder with subzero expected for Christmas day. (Not that you would want to drive on these streets unless you absolutely had to.) Our cable tv is out but I am sure not complaining about that. Obviously my dsl line is still o.k.

This is why I'm glad I don't live anywhere near those 5 big lakes. When you guys get a winter storm, it always involves ice.I'll take our zero-visibility blizzards with 90 km/h winds over ice any day.Today, it's just damn cold. Currently -40 with the wind chill. Yeah, that's the same in both °F & °C!I plan to head downtown later today. I'll have to take the camera to post a picture of my temp gauge - it'll say -25 to -30C!

Well I am in central Ohio, and work at an Airport. No time off for weather. Vibe blasted through the ice like a champ. Snow tires, conti on steel rims. All hangers are frozen shut, but just another day at the ranch. Merry and Happy to all. Looking forward to a Vibe run this spring.

yeah nasty rain and 53 up here in the Lower Hudson Valley of NY. should be at least cold for Christmas, though a little snow would have been nice. YOu guys up there near the lakes can keep your ice! I hope however that it doesn't put the nix on your holiday festivities.

Sunny and 60 here in Sacramento. I'll just head up to Tahoe if I want snow! Actually, I miss those "Lake effects" snowstorms in Wisconsin; but I sure don't miss all the other lousy weather.

I wouldn't even go outside if I knew it was going to be that cold! Nothing is worth enduring that kind of weather(except maybe a hot chick calling you over for some fun, MAYBE)! I was just out walking around an outdoor mall with a t-shirt and blue jeans! The sun was killing my eyes!

It was a moisture laden storm that came up from Texas meeting a cold air mass from Canada. So I'll blame it on the Canadians!

To make a long story short... The Vibe wouldn't get out of the parking lot at work this morning. At home, I'm looking at 14" of snow... Some places to my north ended up with well over 30" of snow. At work, not that much snow, but it was sleeting all night last night until 4:00 AM, then it changed to snow for maybe an hour. There were even rumbles of thunder and flashes of lightning with this storm in the areas that were getting snow dumped on them heavily!I ended up having to leave it there, so I'm without a car for a while. My baby's 25 miles away from me... Had to bum a ride off a guy I work with who has a Jeep Cherokee. This sucks! The ice and snow was packed so thick that it was next to impossible to get the Vibe to move... They didn't get a couple guys out there plowing the lot until 9 AM. And they weren't doing much to improve conditions - the thickness of all that ice was just bending their blades. To add insult to injury, a guy with an AWD Vibe that works where I do made it through that parking lot just fine. It was a challenge for me just to get the car to move an inch or two. Even if I could have left the parking lot at work, I still wasn't going to be able to make it home. The interstates with the exceptions of the ramps were sort-of passable, but the side streets like I live on were still a mess. I'm glad I found another way home - seeing all those cars, trucks, and SUV's littering the shoulders and medians was simply unbelieveable. No doubt in my mind that if I tried driving the car home, it would be somewhere off the road with all of the others... I did see a Matrix that slid off along the way.. Going to see if Dad can bring his 4WD Silverado up and we'll try to get the car out of the parking lot tomorrow (maybe.) I'm sure they have plowed it by now, but I'll probably have a mountain of snow in front of the car. This one ranks in the top 3 of winter storms I've seen in this area... It doesn't take much to cripple this area - they just don't have the equipment necessary to keep up with this stuff like they do up north. Very frustrating day I've had...

Somehow we here in Pittsburgh lucked out a bit on this one. It rained most of the day and was fairly warm for this time of year. It quit raining for a few hours before it turned freezing cold so the roads had some time to dry a bit before all the ice would form. Still some slippery spots I found on the roads on the way home from work tonight. Weather is forcasting 1-2 inches of snow over night tonight. So we got pretty lucky. So far, not hardly any snow. Just some occasional flurries, but we are supposed to be in for some really cold temperatures. My Vibe is armed this winter with some Bridgestone Blizzaks. I'm waiting to take them out and give them a try in the nasty weather.

Colonel Panic - over 40 years ago when I was at Purdue and we had a snow storm we heard that the Govenor of Indiana declared an emergency and ordered BOTH Indiana state snow plows into service.

How are people keeping warm? I know that my furnace has an electronic pilot light and the thermostat operates with electricity. No electricity=no heat for me if the power goes out.

So I should probably not complain about it being 46F right now...Our high was in the low 60s and I ran around in shorts and a sweatshirt all day. My question is the reverse of what I get: How do you deal with all that cold weather and snow/ice? I'll take 118F during the day anytime over -21.

Hotels are probably full.

We have snowdrifts up to the bottom of the mailbox here in Southwest Ohio. Definitely a white Christmas...but not much fun because we were stuck in the house since the roads were totally nasty. Some counties even had levels of snow emergencies declared where you could get a ticket or go to jail for driving in non-emergency situations. The cities and counties were opening up heat centers for those without power and no place to go...but we were wondering how they'd find out about them when it was scrolling across a device powered by electricity (the TV). Here's a picture of my grandparents house with all the pretty snow.
