Cutting holes in doors for speakers

Well, I returned those Rockford Fostgate speakers that I bought. I was not impressed with the sound. So, after having Polks in my last car which I loved, I decided to purchase some Polk component EX3560's for the front and coaxal EX365's for the rear. I just ordered them from Crutchfield and should have them around next Tuesday. My sales rep said the mounting height for the EX365's is too high for the rear. Hopefully, without using a bracket, just mounting it to the metal hole, it will fit. If not, I will have to cut a hole in the plastic door panel and mount them to the panel instead. Guess I may have some nice looking Polk grills on my doors instead of the plain factory grills. Has anyone mounted their speakers like this in their doors, in any car?I was thinking about using a dremel to start the cut and use a small saw to carefully cut it out. My last Polks had a template to use. I'll find out when I receive these next week. Any tips appreciated. Thanks,

I was thinking of putting those same rears in, and Polk Dx 3065's in the front. Would be interested to see if those rears fit!

If you remove the stock plastic speaker/mount and mount your new speaker right on the metal door, you should have plenty of room in front of the speaker.

I had to mount rear tweeters in door by cutting much smaller holes than you'll need. Dremel should work well and you'll have template. Problem for you will be having firm material behind speakers. You may need to build a spacer so plastic panel doesn't flex in as you tighten self tapping screws. Good luck...

I just installed my EX3560's in front. They fit fine and I didn't have any problems installing them. I'm not going to do any cutting in the front doors and hopefully without the adapters in the rear I won't have to there either. I tested them out a little bit and they sound great! Now I just need to install the rears.I haven't permanently mounted my tweeters yet in the front. I am thinking about just super gluing the tweeter magnet to the metal bracket that held the factory tweeter. I may enlarge the hole in the factory grill. I might just make the plastic behind the screen triangle shaped like the screen. I want to make sure it isn't blocking any of the sound waves.I'll let you all know how the rears fit.Later,

Oh, so you had tweeters in front already. I mounted mine right there in the corner panel as well. Polk certainly did make a nice set of speakers. Hope the rest of your install goes smoothly.

I finished installing my new Polks and they sound great. I had no problems mounting the rear speakers. I ended up not using the mounting brackets that Crutchfield provided for the rears and just drilled some new holes into the door frame. That left about an inch between the speaker and the door panel. For the tweeters I just super glued them to the factory metal tweeter mount. I took the factory grill/sill corner piece and used my dremel to enlarge the hole behind the screen since the tweeter is larger than the stock. I really like Polk speakers. My younger brother has my last car which I installed a nice system in with some Polks. I installed them almost four years ago and they still sound great.Later,

I think the stock amp was lucky if it produced the claimed 200 watts! I do not think the amd had a cross-over for the tweets, I was especially disappointed that they weren't even wired in line with the mid in the doors via a passive X-over. I am afraid all you have is that little POS capaciter attatched to the back of the tweet to prevent bass. Be careful if you are using the stock speakers with an external amp!!

quote:I think the stock amp was lucky if it produced the claimed 200 watts! It depends how the calculate the power of the amp.It could have very significant diffrence depend how you calculate power. It depends if this power is RMS, peak or peak to peak. As an exemple, lets take an amp who can drive from +10v to -10v with a 4 ohms charge. Basic eletronic sez: P= IxE, I=E/R.RMS W = (0.707xE)xI (0.707x10)x(10/4)= 17.667 W RMSNow if we take peak voltageW= ExI 10x2.5= 25 wIf we take paek to peak voltage20x2.5= 50wAnother way to calculate W is P= E²/RWith peak V 10²/4= 25WWith peak to peak 20²/4= 100 WIf we take the power of the stock amp 200WIn the worst casethis amp is 200w, 4 channels, so 50w each50=E²/R : E²=50x4 => 10v peak to peak, so from +5v to -5vRMS W will be (5x0.707)x(5/4)= 4.42 W RMS per channelIn conclusion, if it is written 100 W an amp, it is not realy false, but the RMS power could be as low as 17W. It just depend how they calculate the power. RMS power is alway the best way to see real power. That`s why you have to take care when you buy an amp, especially when it is written 800W on it (even more when it is a Pyramid amp)

where did you mount the Polk crossover? As I understand your posts you mounted the Polk tweeters where the factory ones had been? Behind the factory grills after you widened the hole? Is that right? Do you have pictures? Thanks.

I mounted the crossover on the door, right in front of the door opening mechanism. You can see how there is a good size gap in the upper part of the door panel right underneath the window sill. Yeah, I just mounted the Polk tweeters where the factory ones were. How do I post pictures on here? I took a few to show the tweeter.
