Here in Southern Ontario, the gas jumped 7 cents per liter overnight. We are now hovering around $1.40 per liter (which is $5.30 / US Gallon).

OK .... It dropped again here in Toledo I believe this is $3.79 (wish it were $3.73). Too crowded for me to use this station PLUS I just filled up yesterday so I'm good for a week or so

Well prices here have settled down here for the moment, $3.78/gal of 87oct, but it finally happened... It cost me $45 to fill the Mazda this morning, the most I have ever spent on fuel for one of my own vehicles.

Why are you wasting your money on premium in a car designed to use regular? Premium will not afford you more mileage or better power and could actually harm the catalytic converter and O2 sensors.

I'm not sure that justifies slowly killing pieces of the emissions system and depleting your wallet even more in the process, especially in a vehicle that has a questionable cat life to begin with?

Bah... a car is a product, nothing more. You WILL be spending a large amount of money on it during it's life. Repairs and such are just the price of ownership... So some of us spend an extra $5 (at most) for a tank of gas, there are plenty of us here who probably fritter that amount away at the local Mcdonalds or Starbucks everyday.I'm failing to see how 91 octane, ethanol free gas will kill a catalytic converter any faster then 87 with 10% ethanol.Gas this morning was 129.9 in Cochrane, 127.9 in Olds, and 119.4 here in Red Deer! I saved $4.75 by pushing the gas light to get back here!

Quote, originally posted by star_deceiver »I'm failing to see how 91 octane, ethanol free gas will kill a catalytic converter any faster then 87 with 10% ethanol.I am not as eloquent as a scientist might be explaining this, but I do know that an engine and its emissions systems are designed to burn 87 oct cleanly once the cat gets up to temperature. And they are designed to do just that because the fuel will burn at the correct rate for that combination. Add 10% ethanol and it will burn cleaner still and have a little additional power.Take the same engine and run it on 91-93 oct and the fuel will not burn completely because it will burn slower in that engine. The exhaust valve will open too soon and some of the raw hydrocarbon will find its way down the exhaust manifold and into the cat. Now the cat is trying to clean up the exhaust, but now has additional hydrocarbon to deal with. It will try and succeed to do this but at the expense of the catalyst. The cat will heat up to a temperature higher than intended to accomplish this causing it to burn out sooner. Engines with higher compressions or ones that are boosted (turbo/supercharged,) or with more radical cams or cam/ignition timing require higher octane because they will more completely burn the fuel before reaching any emissions related parts. They would knock and ping, burning piston tops and spark plug electrodes on lower octane because 87 would burn too fast for them.

A personal example:My 1980 Civic. I raced this car on the weekends and it was my daily driver the rest of the time. I LOVED that car, I really did, but it only had a claimed 77hp in stock form. The car only weighed 1978lbs curb weight so this was enough to get it going and afforded good mileage for that time and run on 87, which it did quite well.Of course being the car guy I am I wanted more. I dumped in a medium grind "street" cam and bored out the carburetor jets (remember carburetors?)a bit and it still ran OK on 87... as long as I didn't push it too hard. Then I modified the distributor (remember those?) I welded up the advance plate and limited its overall travel. I removed the spark retard and stopped that up too. I added lighter advance weights and different springs to make this all work. Then I set the static timing to 12* BTDC, but was getting full 27* advance by the time the revs were @ 1700. VERY quick ignition advance.Boy oh BOY!! That car came to life after that, and on stock exhaust too!! But that was also the last of the 87 for that car. At the time, the difference in cost between regular and premium was just a few cents, but at the same time I had more available power and my regular mileage went UP from an average 28mpg to 32, so it paid for itself and made the car much more enjoyable to drive.

Sure can!! Points are one thing I don't miss. They were always a PITA to me. Electronic, especially today is the way to go, IMO.Unlimited "base" timing is what all or most vehicles had back then, not like today's where you have to delve into a computer (if you can) to make any difference. But I modified the timing curve of my Honda's dist, not just the base setting. That's what can make the real difference from stock as I found out.I'm only sorry I never had the capabilty to adjust the cam timing. I just never had the $$$ for the adjustable cog. For all I accomplished with it, mostly seat-of-the-pants stuff, the car still could've used more low-mid range grunt. I'm convinced from all I've learned since then that advancing the cam timing would've done that.

I read somewhere that it is technically illegal for american gas retailers to look across the street at another stations price and then set theirs lower accordingly. Any truth to this?

I was going to comment on this yesterday when it was as low as $3.44 ....... BUT then "something must have happened" ...... an oil exec probably broke a fingernail or some other crisis, and it jumped $.45 and is now up to $3.89 . I believe this is one of the highest single day increases in history. Then I realized a MAJOR holiday is this weekend and most of us will travel a bit, so why not bend us over AGAIN and get some more $$$ out of our hide

Unfortunately our local prices went up before I had a chance to fill up. $1.349/L = $5.10/gal for regular. 91 octane was $1.459/L = $5.52/gal. I'm glad our cars only use regular! Still cost me $50 from just under 1/4 tank - 37L. St least I went about 550km on that. The warmer weather is helping with mileage for sure. Not looking forward to filling our van this summer though - 98.5L tank!John

In my area I've seen prices as low as $3.73 in Bucks County...I'm not sure what my Wawa gas station is charging today. There are still plenty of stations around charging $3.85-3.89...and I just drive on by!
