On a recent trip from Louisville to just outside Cincinnati I managed to break the 40 mpg threshold (40.2). 90% highway, on a full tank of gas.

In most of my daily driving, 60-70% highway, I've been getting about 32-33 mpg.

That's amazing, congrats!
I wish the blind spots were not so bad, otherwise I'd remove the mirrors to try and grab higher highway mileage on the awd

I use my mirrors fairly often. I know that they do increase drag, but I drive really defensively. I guess it comes with being used to fighting through DC traffic all the time.

I haven't reset my UltraGauge; since the Cincy trip I've filled up once and am still averaging about 35 mpg in mostly highway driving.

Just went thru the first tank on my new 2006 Vibe automatic. Drove 303 miles and it took 11 gallons to fill it up again. It figures out to 27.5 mpg, if I figured right. 50/50, city/hiway. Also noticed I got about 100 miles out of the first quarter tank. Probably not a terribly accurate gas gauge. Getting to know my new Vibe, love it!

I've been getting 26-27 mpg is all :/ It's at least 60% highway miles, if not more. I'm not sure if this is from the AC being on low constantly (It's Texas summer, give me a break) or something else.

When I bought the car, I changed the spark plugs, engine air filter, PCV valve, and I cleaned the MAF sensor. Is there anything else I can do to hopefully get to around 30 mpg?

It's the 1.8L auto tranny. I'm getting cruise control added in the next week or two. Should that help out a little?

I can't really comment on this since I have a 2nd gen (2009-2010) and consequently am not very familiar with the 1st gens (2003-2008), but I can give you some advice that wil help increase your gas mileage in any vehicle...

1.) Make sure your tires are properly inflated
2.) Keep up on routine maintenance i.e. oil changes, clean / replace air filter, etc.
3.) Keep RPMs under 3000 when accelerating
4.) When possible, and safe, take your foot off the accelerator pedal and coast to a stop sign / light instead of using the brakes as much
5.) Keep any unnecessary items (weight) out of the vehicle

I think that about covers it. The main one that has really helped me is keeping the RPMs under 3000 when accelerating. It's actually pretty easy to do as long as you don't stomp on the accelerator pedal.

Put a MANUAL transmission in it My Vibe GT 2.4L gets mid to upper 20's city and mid 30's hwy. I even got an impressive 38mpg last month on the Pontiac Illinois trip? Behavior modification may be the best advice.

I do most of this normally. Only thing I'm guilty of is the acceleration, but even then I don't do that all the time.

Is the tire pressure based on the tires themselves or a set amount based on the car? I've heard people do both, so I'm kinda confused. I know I've seen the rating on the tires, but then see some people who go by the car.

Sadly, I've never learned to drive manual. I understand the concept of it, but I've never tried. Closest I've gotten to driving a car with manual transmission is riding a motorcycle.

Not really sure. The recommend PSI for the tires on our Vibes is 32 PSI. I up them to 35 PSI. I do know you don't want to add too much to them because it can cause uneven wear, etc.

Same here. Well, I drove a manual once when I was 16 or 17. My boyfriend at the time had a friend who had a really crappy Chevy Beretta that was manual. My boyfriend took me out in it on a country road and taught me how to drive it. He said I did well considering it was my first time driving a manual. Never tried again since because no one I know has ever had a manual. I'd really like to learn, if nothing else, just to know how, although getting a 1st gen Vibe GT could also be a good excuse to learn !

Sometimes I feel like less of a man for not knowing how to drive manual cars. Cause apparently that's a guy thing.

And then I remember I have a beard and my friends don't and then I feel alright.

I'm pretty surprised at my fuel mileage. The EPA estimate for city is 21 MPG. I do all city driving, and I'm quite peppy to get up to speed, and the past two months I've gotten about 24.5 MPG. In the summer I was over 25 MPG around town.
