Hmm... I was hoping you wouldn't say that. Yes, if there is a name assigned, that is what you would see in network places. You are going all the way through my network places (entire network, etc) right? If the two weren't seeing each other for a while, or if the IP address for one or both changed, the locations in the root of network places may disappear.I wonder if the two are communicating at all. Have you tried pinging the desktop from the laptop? If you don't know how, I'll tell you. But in case you do I won't insult you by doing so now.

quote:The laptop doesn't see it at all as far as I can tell. The desktop computer has a name assigned to it and thats what I should see on my laptop when I look at my network places, right? Both machines must also have the same Workgroup name. In Win 2000, right click on My Computer, then Properties, then the Network Identification tab.

However, I used to have it so that I could access the shared files on the desktop computer, but now I can't do it. I'm not sure how to do it. I tried running the network connection wizard and that messed up my internet connection on the laptop. So my POS router seems to have died again. I tried the reset button but nothing this time. Everytime I plug the cable into the router instead of directly into the computer, I have no internet. GRRR... should I just get a different type of router altogether?
