I know my reciever is a serial port Rand McNalley that I got forever ago, it's mounted dead center in the dash, just in front of the defrost vent (toward the inside). That's where the stock NAV antenna was.

I have the Delorme Earthmate USB GPS receiver and have used it plenty of times just by setting it onto the dash, with no loss of signal whatsoever going through the windshield.I switch between MS MapPoint (AKA Streets and Trips), Delorme's mapping software, and iGuidance.

When I first bought my Mac in early 2005, I found this "Route 2004" stuff at CompUSA. Unfortunately, they never updated that past the 2004 version. The company that made it seems to have moved on to Windoze "smart" phones and such. *barf* It was a passable piece of software, I figured it would be somewhat useful for standalone mapping on the desktop but I really think it needs to be connected to a GPS and have you moving to get the best out of it. I don't know of many other mapping apps for the Mac, damn shame. I've always been a fan of DeLorme's Street Atlas USA line, back in the day they used to support Macs but decided that they only wanted to support M$. I do have a copy of Street Atlas USA running in Linux under Crossover Office though. Back to our beloved Apples, I ran across this a sec ago... Don't know anything about it but it looks interesting. Looks like it may be complicated to deal with as far as loading maps goes... But the upside is how you can load maps from anywhere. If I had a laptop and gps I'd probably give this stuff a try and get the topo disc for the entire USA along with it.eh, maybe someday we'll have more choices for mapping... I guess that's one of the few things the windows people have us beat at.

The best deal out there for GPS in my ever-so-humble opinion is a refurbished Garmin iQue 3600. You can get it for about $250 on eBay and sometimes on deal site like Woot.com, and it comes with Maps for the whole USA. It comes with a cradle that sits on your dashboard (a bit tight on my 2006 Vibe, but workable) whose power plug goes into your cigarette lighter socket, and includes a nice and loud speaker. The screen is big enogh for my uses.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ...=UTF8Plus, it is a Palm unit, so you can bring it with you for other uses, and use the built-in address book to store your destinations and waypoints. And for anything else you may want. Plus there are a lot of add-on programs to add functionality out there, most for free. You can even get a program that overlays satellite maps on the screen, so you can see the pointer showing exactly where you are on the terrain. It is compatible with both Mac and PCs for syncing (though for initial setup and loading of maps, you DO need a PC or VirtualPC on your Mac). The only downside is the battery is weak, so you probably won't want to use it for hiking, unless you have an external battery pack. I can't recommend this GPS highly enough. We brought it to California and Minnesota (I like in CT) for weddings this year, and we were the only guests who never got lost driving between the various sites.
