well, i've met many canadian and british police (many of them come to florida for vacation, you know), and from our conversations, policing is about the same. the area i patrol is a suburb of both st.pete and tampa. because of out geographic location we have somehow become a central drug supply. i don't really have any desire to work narcotics, but it does bring a lot of crime. police work in the states though, has been changing. many agencies are now requiring cadets and applicants to have a four year degree. this is something i happen to agree with. i have been in police work for almost ten years now, and have been pushing for the professionalization of the job since i started. some beleive it is not necessary to have a degree to do policework, but with the volume of information and law and procedural constructs that need to be known for the job, college graduates have an easier time learning. most agancies here use the san jose model of field training (i myself am an FTO) which places a probationary officer with a veteran for fourteen weeks. this really helps.i wish you luck with your career, and feel free to ask me questions anytime...Quote, originally posted by rated_w »how is it down there where you police? yikes narcotics.... I've seen my fair share down in T.O on friday.. (we were doing a field trip for a class) .. not really too much of a friendly environment I can tell you. In Toronto, from what I understand, we do have a FTO officer with a probationary officer for a set amount of time.. but I forgot the length of the probationary period ... From what I understand toronto police does not require you to have any more education than high school, however, having more education is a good thing in recruitment

Nothing glamorous... Reboot monkey. Actually nowadays, I'm second level support for a help desk supporting linux servers running a POS system developed inhouse. I get to fix the things the level 1 guys couldn't, and also find myself having to repair things they have broken. Or most of the time, I just have to say "i dunno..." lol
