You're numbers for both of your family's Vibes look impressive considering the extreme cold weather we've had AND the winter blend factor. Junior's Vibe GT has recently had HORRIBLE numbers. Since December he's had: 23.2, 21.7, 22.9, 20.3, 20.9, 21.1, and just last week 18.7mpg :x Lots of warm-ups (car sits outside all the time) and 100% stop & go city driving. Come springtime I may have to clean EVERYTHING up including the engine & associated components to see if those numbers can climb back up to where they should be.

Ouch, yeah those are some pretty low numbers :(.

Both our Vibes are in a heated garage all the time and we do more country driving as opposed to stop and go city traffic, so typically our numbers are pretty spot on with the EPA ratings and sometimes even slightly above.

A couple years ago I read an article in (I believe) Car And Driver that said you should only let your vehicle warm up for a minute or two before you start driving in the winter. It said that if your vehicle is just sitting there idling for 5-10 minutes, you're wasting fuel, but if you let it run for just a minute or two and then start driving (taking it easy on the accelerator pedal, etc. until the engine gets up to normal operating temperature), it's actually better for the vehicle because you're using fuel to drive instead of wasting it by idling. Ever since I read that article, I try not to let the Vibe run for more than a minute or two before leaving work, etc. It does seem to have helped at least a little with our gas mileage during the winter months. Just something to think about for the winter months ;).

2009 GT Mileage usually runs about 25 for mixed driving and sometimes I get close to 30 mpg but I am a slow poke driver, in winter I get less cause I like to let the car warm up sometimes for five mintues if its cold out :o .... I did hook up an HHO generator which I had mounted behind the mesh grill and ran a hydrogen gas line directly to the plastic intake past the mass air flow sensor, this had me pushing around 35 mpg, but after continual use I noticed the rocker switch I had hooked up to it started to overheat, It lasted about 2 months before a final meltdown of the switch after a long day of driving with the unit pumping HHO gas to the intake. Next time I hook up this HHO unit I will run some fuses and some relays to limit the power draw to the unit, this way it is safer for everything.... Anyway This is my new profile for the vibe forum

Should start seeing more numbers like this since the weather is finely starting to warm up a bit and the winter blend will be going away soon.

Just got a 2003 Base model, and my first measured fill-up was 28.9. Second one was much better at 36.8, I drive in and around Indianapolis about 200 miles every weekday and I figure I get more highway than surface streets, but that varies.

Hi All-

'03 Vibe GT Man 6 speed. If I stay to 55 on hwy I get 34-36mpg. 65 = 32-33mpg. Regular 50/50 city/hwy I get 30mpg every fill-up. And when I say city - I mean New York City so you are going SLOW.

The first couple years all 4 tires on both Vibes were kept at the recommended 32 PSI. Last year I upped them all to 34 PSI because the front tires always looked low at 32 PSI. Starting with the winter tires back in the fall, I upped them all again to 35 PSI. Just last weekend I re-installed the 18" OEM wheels and tires and put them all at 35 PSI.

A few tricks that I use to help increase gas mileage is keeping the RPMs under 3000 when accelerating, coasting to stop signs and stop lights (whenever safe to do so) and using the cruise control whenever possible (I don't set it any higher then 55 MPH though, unless the speed limit is higher then 55).

I do have my tires inflated to near 40 psi....but my right front tire has a very low leak.....Anyway it did help my mpg increase by 2-4 miles.

Close to 1500 mi trip to Charlotte, NC and back this weekend. The Vibe isn't necessarily ideally set up for mountain driving but made it down and back without issue. Recorded each fillup for my '03 AWD at:

8.004 gal @ $3.699 = $29.61 >>> 240.8 mi >>> 30.1 mpg

9.554 gal @ $3.439 = $32.88 >>> 271.7 mi >>> 28.4 mpg

9.121 gal @ $3.559 = $32.46 >>> 270.9 mi >>> 29.7 mpg

10.815 gal @ $3.759 = $40.65 >>> 356.2 mi >>> 32.9 mpg

11.358 gal @ $3.799 = $43.19 >>> 324.0 mi >>> 28.5 mpg
TOTALS
48.852 gal $178.79 >>> 1463.6 mi >>> 29.96 mpg

Definitely happy with that! Had to drive in 3rd gear to keep my speed in the mountains often. Avg speed was probably around 75 and I did not use cruise control!

Vibe is now the official family Winter car... Blizzak equipped on 16 inch steelies. The ancient 1999 Saturn SW2 wagon that was our Winter car is no longer State Inspection worthy. Too much under body rust to fix up. It has over 180,000 mostly Winter miles on it, and it's time to let it go. No rust on the body, it was reliable, and a good driving car while we had it. I can't complain about it at all.

Didn't have to drive the Vibe very much this Winter and actual snow on the road days were few. Most of the snow fell on coastal areas of Maine this year. It was just pretty cold at times, so was able to avoid the totally snowy, salt spread roads much of the time. I kept the snow tires inflated to 37 front 35-36 rear and noted that they are wearing very evenly. There's more than enough tread on them for a couple of Winters at least.

As I mentioned, I didn't have to drive it that much this winter, but the two times that I filled it up, I recorded 33 and 34 mpg. That was during the colder period January-February span. Morning temperatures were as low as 10 degrees below zero and afternoon temperatures were held to the lower teens above zero for quite a few days during those months. Not spectacularly cold, but colder for a longer length of time than we've seen around here the last few years.

The last tank was 36.4 mpg (filled it on the 18th of April), still with the Winter wheels/snow tires on the car. Those come off May 1st or so. We might see some snow tonight. Winter precipitation is not unusual here through April, and my Summer "all season" tires are not great in snow.

MPG will get better when the Summer tires go on. Almost up to 20,000 miles on the ODO!! I'm on my bicycle as soon as the snow goes away, so the miles just don't get piled up. I put as many miles on the bicycles as I did on the car last year.

Anyone notice gasoline prices lately?! Really going up again. :x

Yep and as usual, it's for no apparent reason .

What do you keep your tire pressure at?
My '09 is a 1.8L AT and that's all I usually get in mostly local driving - if I'm lucky. Just got back from a 1,300 mile RT Ohio-NC-Ohio. Overall 31.6 mpg (probably 40 miles local driving in that - rest 60-70 mph interstates). Now, my odometer under reads by about 2.5% so I actually went 1,332.5 miles. On that basis it is 32.4 mpg.

I always said that Toyota needs to take a look at those Vibes that claim to be getting 35-40 mpg and see how those engines differ from the norm.

To get 35 to 40 mpg during mild weather might take a combination of that 1.8L with manual transmission, Mobil 1 since new, tires inflated to 39 front/37 rear, keeping excess stuff out of the car, and a very gentle driving style when you can get away with it. I live in a rural area, where traffic isn't a problem. My commute distance of 14 miles involves no traffic lights or town driving and only 4 stop signs. Speed limits vary from 35 to 50 mph... but mostly 40-45 mph, so perfect conditions just about for excellent mpg. I hardly use my brakes, too.

When I do travel into town, I try not to use the Interstate or Turnpike, where speeds of 65-75 mph significantly drop mileage. A smooth driving technique really does bump efficiency way up on this car. It's pretty easy to get this fuel economy with my Vibe!

I would love to get a 2nd gen 1.8L Vibe someday just so I could see what kind of mileage I could get with it, although I'm pretty darn happy with the mileage we get out of our GTs.

We filled up junior's Vibe yesterday and when uploading the info to MPG Tune, I noticed an interesting statistic. His mileage since ownership was just 3 miles more than my current mileage.

Junior ... 17798 miles (total is 53648), used 734 gal, costing $2529, getting 24.2 mpg

Tim ...... 17795 miles, used 622 gal, costing $1920, getting 28.6 mpg

Part of the reason for the huge difference in mpg is: driving behavior, more city than hwy, and the manual vs automatic tranny!

Only getting 26 mpg in mostly country driving at an avg. speed 50 mph. I am disappointed. I have the base 1.8 fwd . Newer tires on 16 in. rims. Just me in the car almost exclusively. Changed the plugs and cleaned and oiled the K&N air filter. Also, the ride is the worst of any car I have ever owned. I have been thinking about new shocks or 15 in. wheels, but I'm not even sure I want to keep this car yet. I really expected better mileage. :x

Keep your RPMs under 3000 when accelerating. Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Use cruise control whenever possible (if you have it). If you know you are approaching a stop sign or stop light, take your foot off the gas and coast to a stop (whenever it's safe to do so) instead of hitting the brakes at the last second.

These are just a few little things I do in my Vibe to net me better MPG numbers ;).

I would love to drive that way but where I live, ppl drive like idiots and just about run you off the road if you're not going 15 mph over the speed limit! I get lots of one finger salutes from ppl because I drive too slow.

I live about 60 miles west of Chicago. I hardly ever drive on the Interstates / Expressways that go up by the city, but when I do, I love setting the cruise control at 55 and just cruising along while I get passed left and right. I even got passed by a State Trooper once :P! It really doesn't bother me too much when people pass me and if they ride my @ss, I simply continue at the same speed until they finally get pissed enough that they pass me. Everyone's in such a huge hurry these days. Their time is so much more important than everyone else's. Personally, I enjoy getting 28+ MPG as opposed to getting somewhere a few seconds faster. Just my $0.02 though :|.

2003 Vibe GT - 284.8 miles, 13.18 gallons, 21.61 mpg

I was getting about 24-25 on the 2010 GT over the same route. I guess I like lift a bit too much! :D Next tank will be much more conservative..... I hope. :D

I am thinking of getting a '03 or '04 GT Vibe. Most of my driving is highway and staying at the speed limits. I am a little put off though that reports show so much lower mpg than the non-gt version. Can I expect the GT to get sub 30 mpg highway stats?

Regards,
Alan

Welcome to GenVibe. To answer your question ........ NO. At least it shouldn't. Case in point. I have the 09 GT 2.4l engine w/ manual 5-speed and get minimum 32, max 36 mpg highway going the speed limits. You should easily get similar numbers as long as you don't "hot rod" it all the time. Keep us posted if/when you get a Vibe :D

My mom and I both have 2009 Vibe GTs with the 5-speed automatic transmission and by looking at our numbers above, you can see we both average 27-28 MPG over all fillups. I have gotten as high as 34 MPG with 100% highway. The EPA ratings for the 2009 Vibe GT are: 21 MPG city | 24 MPG combined | 29 MPG highway. We surpass all these numbers easily at practically every fillup (*note: you're considering the 2003-2004 Vibe GT which should be able to get even higher numbers because of the smaller 1.8L engine and manual transmission*). A lot of your MPG has to do with how you drive, not just what you drive. Keep up on routine maintenance, make sure your tires are properly inflated, be sure you don't have any extra unnecessary items in the vehicle (added weight), keep your RPMs under 3000 when accelerating and coasting to stop signs and stop lights instead of using the brakes (only when it's safe to do so of course) are all things you can do to help improve your MPG.

Thanks guys for the information on mpg. I went ahead an bought an '03 Vibe GT. A few more miles than I'd like but it seems to be in good condition and runs great. Called in about the last airbag recall and going to take it in next week so they can see if the airbag is of the type affected.
Was told it was an 1.5 hour job to disassemble the dash to determine and then they'd need to order the part if so.
I'd ask them to go over the rest of the car too but of course they will always find something fix.

Thank you. This is the first non-Honda, higher mileage car I have purchased in quite a while. I hope I haven't made a bad choice.

Almost 26 mpg last tank...with about 50/50 city/highway. It's very frustrating. Need to rebuild soon.
