This is as close as one can get to the ends of the runways without putting your vehicle in a dangerous spot as these sideroads are busy and stopping on the freeway really isn't an option.

Love the troll under the bridge!OK, the next challenge is - take a pic of your car with a windmill. It doesn't have to be a Dutch-style windmill, or even a real windmill.

Go for it!In Kansas, you have REAL windmills!

We have a windmill in Decorah that is used to provide power to Luther College; I guess it is going to cut their energy costs down by about1/3 (which is a lot more than I was expecting). It looks awesome pressed against the hilly skyline but for some reason there are a lot of people that complaining about how it ruins the city border. I don't get it.I won't be able to do this picture challenge but I'm looking forward to seeing a real KS windmill farm.

Even if I don't get in on the challenge, I still have the goal of getting as close as I can and taking some good shots. When they built our wind farm they said the turbines were the biggest in the country!

Hmmm... since no one has posted any windmill pictures yet, I may have to go get some later today. Over the past couple years they have put up quite a few windmills not too far from Sandwich. I would rather live next to windmills then some of the people I live near .

I should have checked this thread before leaving Decorah this morning. I figured that it had been completed. I'm not sure of where I could find one in my area. I remember driving past a big wind farm but I can't remember if I was near Cedar Falls or if I saw it when I was going up to Madison. I'm thinking that it was by Madison so I may be out of luck.I may have to go for a drive and see if I come up lucky.

Next challenge: your Vibe or car outside of a local racetrackThis is Raceway park on hwy 101. It is an asphalt oval and figure 8. They do things like Eve of destruction, school bus figure-8s, and stock car racing here. I haven't been to even one of their events.

I might be able to do this one tomorrow night, if it hasn't been taken by then. There's a little track in Decorah but I can't think of a good spot to park to get it in the shot. There's a nice park up on a hill that overlooks the track but that is probably closed for the season.

Quote, originally posted by "Persephone" »Off-topic, but I love trout fishing in Decorah. . . o.oDecorah is a great area for people that like doing outdoor activities. The trail that they're building is awesome. That's about the only real activity I do around there. It's the perfect surface for my road bike. I guess it's also a popular area for mountain biking. I'm not much of a fisherman but it's cool that you've done it in Decorah!

Probably most Decorah residents don't know...

... that hundreds of thousands of people around the world tuned into the below site earlier this year to watch 24/7 coverage from the time the eggs were laid up until after they left the nest. 24/7 coverage will begin again sometime early next year. What the parents go through to ensure the survival of their little ones and watching them grow is really quite an emotional experience, even if you're not into birds. http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles

Haha, yeah. That was pretty crazy. My mom was really into watching that for a while. My niece and nephew enjoyed stopping by the fish hatchery to stare up at the nest. The view wasn't as good as good from down below but it was still pretty cool. Also from Decorah is the kid that broke into a Cedar Falls McDonald's to make himself a burger and fries, and then left. I'm not sure how big that got but I've heard that it was on Good Morning America.

Since a couple of us are now talking about birds, here is a recent video of a Red-tailed hawks nest that had been there and being used for 12 years being blown away during the recent high winds in California. I hadn't been watching this particular site for a long time, but thousands of people were heartbroken to see this happen live. Fortunately, no babies were in the nest at the time. For bird fans, the last seconds are heartbreaking.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...share(I don't mean to highjack this great thread, but Decorah isn't frequently a city in the news.)

Houston, thanks for sharing that video. I agree; the last few seconds are unfortunate. It reminded me of one of those found-footage movies (like the Blair Witch Project) where something devastating happens and the camera cuts away.CAMOGIRL, your cladding looks great. What do you treat it with? That's a great picture. I'm looking forward to your new challenge. Hopefully it's something that I can do.

Thanks! What do I treat it with? Uhmmm... Plasti-dip. It's holding well, and the place it got scraped off covered up well. I was even able to scrub the bugs off carefully. I just thought the gray cladding didn't suit as well as black would. And yeah, Iowa dude, you can do this one. I came up with it with other flatlanders in mind My challenge: your car in the middle of nowhere. You must be offroad or on a dirt or gravel road with no signs of civilization. Farm houses buildings are ok, as are other rural things like rwd water towers or radio towers.I got mine when I went in search of the windmills today, this is as close as I got.And because I said I would:I'm still over a mile away from them, but the road curved the opposite way

In the spirit of the upcoming holidays, the new challenge is to photograph your Vibe with some festive lighting. This is supposed to be downtown Cedar Falls. The lighting is awesome in person. Unfortunately, my camera was cold and blurred all of the lights so this turned out poorly. Oh well, it sort of get's the point across.

You gotta love a tastefully done holiday display of lights. It makes for a nice backdrop to a photo. I wish that I could have captured how great the lights here look in person. It makes me want to walk up and down the downtown strip looking for gifts to buy my friends and families. It really makes the cold weather tolerable.

Stopped out in front of one of my neighbors house and got a pic of junior's 09 Vibe GT in front of his house. This guy goes nuts and always wins the media prize for the best house display. It causes a traffic jam on certain nights
