One of the best ways to keep your rims from building up all kinds of brake dust and other crap is to wipe your rims with WD-40 after every wash. Spray WD-40 on a rag and wipe it on the entire rim, this will keep the dust from really sticking. Also be sure to wax the rims when you wax the car. Don't spray the WD-40 directly on the rim, you might get some on the brake rotors. This would really screw up your stopping distance and will also mess up the brake pads.

I should have phrased it differently, it will keep the grime from cooking onto your rims. You can easily remove any dust with a towel if you have the WD40 on the rims.

I all ways felt the point was to have no oil based anythiong of any kind so less dirt and grim would stick to the wheels. Some said useing Windex on your wheels to get all the oil off of them. I have done this after I syray silicone on my tires to keep them shiny. The windex method seems to keep the wheels cleaner longer because there isn't anything on the wheels then that holds the dirt on the wheel.
Maybe a good mix would be Windex in the summer and WD40 in the winter. Winter seems to be the time when the most crap gets on your wheels. I'll have to try windex in the summer.
